The film was launched in October 2019. Principal photography began in January 2020 but the production has been delayed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film is scheduled to be released on 4 February 2022.[3]

Production[]

Development[]

The film was launched on 8 October 2019 on the occasion of Vijayadasami tentatively titled as #Chiru152.[11] The film marks the maiden collaboration of Chiranjeevi with the director Koratala Siva.[12] The title was accidentally revealed as Acharya by Chiranjeevi during audio launch of the film O Pitta Katha on 1 March 2020.[13][14]

Mani Sharma is composing the film's music. Cinematography and editing are performed by Tirru and Naveen Nooli respectively.[15] Suresh Selvarajan is the art director.[16]

Casting[]

Trisha was cast in a lead role but she walked out of the film citing creative differences.[17] Makers approached Kajal Aggarwal instead and Aggarwal confirmed that she was doing the film.[18] There were reports that Mahesh Babu was approached for an extended cameo.[19] However, Chiranjeevi confirmed that his son Ram Charan would be doing the role and Koratala Siva adjusted the role to make it as a full length role.[20][21][22] Pooja Hegde is cast opposite Charan.[23] Regina Cassandra was signed for a special song.[24]

Filming[]

Principal photography began in January 2020.[25][26] Important portions were shot with Chiranjeevi and others at Ramoji Film City.[19] The filming was going at a brisk pace until it was suspended in March 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic.[27] The filming resumed in November 2020, and Kajal Aggarwal joined the sets of the film in Hyderabad in December 2020.[28][29] A temple town set spanning 20 acres was built for the film.[1]

Ram Charan joined the production in January 2021, whose character is revealed as Siddha.[30] The film team, including Chiranjeevi, have reached Rajahmundry in January 2021.[31][32] In March 2021, Pooja Hegde began filming her portions with a montage song taking place at a specially-constructed set in Maredumilli. A schedule is planned to take place at Singareni coal mines, Yellandu later that month.[33] Following the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in India, filming was indefinitely paused till June 2021. In July 2021, filming was resumed in at a village set constructed in Hyderabad. Chiranjeevi joined the production on the same day.[34] Charan resumed his part of filming the same month.[35][36] Except for two songs, the rest of the filming was completed in August 2021.[37]

Legal issue[]

In August 2020, writer Rajesh Manduri alleged that Acharya was plagiarized from his script.[38] He supposedly narrated the story to production house Mythri Movie Makers a few years ago which did not materialize. Mythri Movie Makers refuted the allegation, calling it a "gimmick."[39] Matinee Entertainment stated that any such claims were baseless, iterating that the story of Acharya belongs to Koratala.[40] Koratala responded that his story had no resemblance to Manduri's.[41]
