The Netherlands were represented by Treble with the song "Amambanda", which was selected in the national final Nationaal Songfestival 2009, organised by the Dutch broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS). The song is written and composed by the members of Treble and contains English, as well as imaginary lyrics.
Nationaal Songfestival 2006 was the national final that selected the Dutch entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006. The competition consisted of a final on 12 March 2006 which took place at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, hosted by Paul de Leeuw and was broadcast on Nederland 2 as well as streamed online via the broadcaster's website nos.nl.[1][2]

Nine songs performed by three artists invited by NOS to participate competed in the final where the winner was determined over two rounds of voting. In the first round, three of the nine songs, by one act each, proceeded to the superfinal based on the votes from a ten-member jury panel. In the superfinal, the winner was selected exclusively by public televoting. Each juror selected their favourite song of each artist in the first round, while viewers were able to vote via telephone and SMS in the superfinal.
The competing artists were presented on 22 November 2005 during a press conference that took place in Amsterdam. Following the press conference, a song submission period was opened where composers were able to submit their songs until 16 January 2006.[4] 174 songs were received by the broadcaster at the closing of the deadline. 82 of the songs were submitted for Maud, 47 were submitted for Behave and 45 were submitted for Treble. Each of the artists selected three songs for the competition: two songs were self-provided and one song was selected from the received submissions. The nine competing entries were announced on 15 February 2006.[5][6]

The final took place on 12 March 2006. In the first round, each of the three acts performed their three candidate Eurovision songs and the votes of a ten-member jury determined the song of each artist that proceeded to the superfinal.[7] In addition to the performances of the competing entries, the show featured guest performances by the Greek dance group Evropi.[8]
