The Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School[1] is a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated school located at Anderson Road, Cochin House, Egmore in Chennai - 600006. It is recognized as the first CBSE school in Chennai. It is ranked as one of the best CBSE schools in Chennai ever since its inception and produces regional toppers in 10th and 12th board exams every single year.

It is an English medium school and offers students with a choice of second and third language courses in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Sanskrit and French.

The school is spacious with an area of around 3 acres and situated in the heart of the city. It has a colossal auditorium where cultural events take place on a regular basis and also has a massive playground for a variety of sports from football to cricket, volleyball and badminton courts, athletics tracks and a range of indoor games facilities.

The school holds an annual cultural extravaganza named "Genesis" for the 11th and 12th grade students, inviting students from other schools in the city to perform in the event. The Madras Week, which marks the founding of the city, is celebrated in the school auditorium in August.

It is known for providing excellent overall development of students vis-à-vis education, sports, culturals (music, dance, dramatics, debates, fine arts, etc), NCC, Road Safety Patrol and Youth Red Cross.

The school's principal is Sunitha Vipinchandran. The school has about a 100 teachers both in the Primary and Senior Sections. There are over 3000 students as of June 2015.

It has 6 houses (sports). They are Ammaji (red), Anna (green), Bharathiyar (blue), Nehru (pink), Vallathol (purple) and Damodar (yellow).

History[]

It was established in 1966 and is recognized as the first CBSE school in Chennai. It was founded in memory of the renowned Malayalam poet Mahakavi Kumaran Asan and is run by the Asan Memorial Association.[2]

Genesis[]

Genesis is an annual inter-school cultural fest and is one of the oldest as well, which is held over 2 days covering around 20 different events and competitions. They ask students for sponsors of event. It is noted as the best inter-school cultural event in south India and all secondary school students in the region look forward to attending it every year. It was first held in 1989 and celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 6, 7 and 8 August 2014. The students of grades 11 and 12 organize Genesis with the help of the cultural coordinators, Mrs. Latha Vijayakumar (Full-time Teacher).
