Azatan (Armenian: Ազատան), is a major village and rural community (municipality) in the Shirak Province of Armenia. The National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia (ARMSTAT) reported its population was 5,697 in 2010,[1] up from 4,838 at the 2011 census.[2]
The name derives from the Armenian word Azatan (Armenian: Ազատան) - meaning "freedmen". Azatan was also a Sassanid military administrative position given to Swaran Unit.
