A bun is a small, usually round, sweet cake.[1] Though they come in many shapes and sizes, buns are most commonly round, and hand-sized or smaller. The word is also used for non-sweet round bread rolls to be filled with hamburgers or other savoury fillings.[1]
The usage of the term differs greatly in different regions; for example, in Southern England a bun is a hand-sized sweet cake; in the north of Ireland and Northern England, it is a round loaf of ordinary bread.[2]
Buns are usually made from a dough of flour, sugar, milk, yeast and butter. Sweet bun dough is distinguished from bread dough by being enriched with sugar and butter, and sometimes egg. Common sweet varieties contain small fruit or nuts, and may be topped with icing or caramel, and filled with jam or cream.
Chinese baozi, with savoury or sweet fillings, are often referred to as "buns" in English.
