Barrister Babu is an Indian Hindi-language social drama television series that premiered 11 February 2020 on Colors TV and ended on 12 November 2021.[1] Produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions, it starred Pravisht Mishra, Anchal Sahu and Aurra Bhatnagar Badoni. The series revolves around the tale of Anirudh Roy Choudhary, a London-returned barrister and Bondita Das who is married to him. Anirudh fights the oppressive and patriarchal society to educate her to become a barrister

Plot[]

Set in the pre-independence era in rural Bengal, Anirudh Roy Choudhary, a 22-year-old barrister, returns from London to Tulsipur, to wipe out customs and societal beliefs which prevent the progress of women. He is set to marry his childhood friend, Saudamini "Mini" Bhaumik. Meanwhile, Bondita Das is an 11-year-old Bengali Hindu girl, who lives with her widowed mother Sumati, maternal uncle Sundaram, aunt Devoleena, and cousin Sampoorna. Sundaram and Devoleena decide to have Bondita marry an elderly man, while Sampoorna is set to marry Saurabh, Anirudh's best friend. However, the elderly man dies unexpectedly dies midway the wedding rituals and Anirudh has to marry Bondita to stop her become a part of Sati. Mini plots to separate Anirudh and Bondita with Anirudh's father, Binoy's help. Anirudh refuses to recognize Bondita as his wife, and rather sees her as his responsibility.

After initial confusion, Anirudh's uncle, Trilochan, accepts Bondita, to save their family's reputation. Eventually, Mini's evil plots are exposed and thrown out of house while Bondita is finally welcomed to Roy Choudhury house.

With Anirudh's help, Bondita starts to go to school as the first girl from Tulsipur. However, Mini kidnaps Bondita and locks her in a chemical factory. Saurabh saves Bondita but dies himself while doing so. Mini is arrested along with Saurabh's father, Premlal, who tries to kill Anirudh to avenge Saurabh's death. Anirudh tells Bondita that he wants her to become a barrister. Binoy marries the widowed Sampoorna after being blackmailed by Sampoorna's parents.

Shortly afterwards, Anirudh and Bondita nullify their marriage to support the Child Marriage Act. Bondita's grandaunt, Kalindi aka Thaku Maa, enters and takes Bondita to Krishna Nagar, creating havoc in lives of Anirudh and Bondita. She plans Bondita's marriage to Chandrachur Banerjee, but a disguised Anirudh rescues her. Bondita decides to become a barrister, and Anirudh sends her to London to fulfill her dream. Kalindi places Bondita's cousin, Tupur in her place to marry Chandrachur, to save her name. Chandrachur is attracted to Bondita and thus unwillingly marries Tupur.

Eight years later[]

Bondita is now grown up and returns to Tulsipur as a gold-medalist barrister. However, much to her dismay, she learns about the factionalism between Tulsipur and Krishna Nagar, as Kalindi and the Roy Choudhurys have now become sworn enemies. Anirudh refuses to see Bondita, as she is related to Krishna Nagar, but misses her. Bondita learns that after she left, when Kalindi had finally agreed to start a new friendly relation with Roy Choudhurys, Anirudh betrayed them by setting up a bomb behind gifts. Bondita refuses to believe that, and to find out the truth, goes to Tulsipur as Vaijayanti. She is shocked to see the mentally-disabled Binoy, and Sampoorna reveals that Krishna Nagar gave them poisoned food, attacked them. Eventually, Bondita changes Anirudh's rude behavior. In a turn of events, she is exposed while saving Binoy. As Anirudh keeps quiet and doesn't support her, an upset breaks all relations with him. Anirudh, who feels guilty and decides to let go of the enmity, realises that he has fallen in love with Bondita and confesses his feelings to her. Bondita forgives him and they manage to convince their families to end the feud. Their marriage is fixed and they get married in a grand ceremony.

On the wedding night, Chandrachur, who has been lusting after Bondita all along, attempts to molest her. However, he catches Bondita's cousin, Tapur trying to reveal his intention and molests her. Anirudh catches him red-handed and started chasing him. In a twist of events, he accidentally pushes Chandrachur off the cliff. Anirudh accepts the crime silently to save Tapur's dignity. Bondita takes it upon herself to fight the case for Anirudh. After much investigation, she finds out the truth and encourages Tapur to testify in court. Bondita later finds Tupur's activities suspicious and finds that Chandrachur is still alive and has been kept hidden. She manages to tie him up and makes him confess all his crimes, including that he was the one who hid bombs behind Anirudh's gifts and poisoned their food, to avenge him for not being able to marry Bondita. Bondita finally wins the case, proving Anirudh is innocent, and becomes an inspiration to all the women.

In a turn of events, Bondita is dragged and thrown in the river by some villagers who support patriarchy and consider Bondita as a danger for the society. Anirudh manages to save Bondita, but he himself goes missing. Anirudh's lookalike younger brother, Batuk too arrives there and tries to save Anirudh, but in vain. Everyone assumes him to be dead and this only fuels Batuk's anger towards Bondita. Bondita is revealed to be pregnant. Batuk disguises himself as Anirudh to snatch Bondita's child and throw her out of the house after her delivery. Trilochan, who is unaware of Batuk's intentions, agrees to him as he doesn't want Bondita's health to deteriorate from the shock.

Bondita continues getting suspicious of "Anirudh". On the other hand, Anirudh is shown to be alive, but is paralyzed and cannot remember his address.

Six months later[]

Bondita is in shock after realising that Anirudh is presumed to be dead by everyone. Upon investigating, she gets to know that Anirudh and Batuk look alike and thus realises that she is living with Batuk, not Anirudh. She is heartbroken and shocked, but on feeling Anirudh's presence, she believes that he is alive.

Bondita gives birth to twins: a girl and a boy. Meanwhile, Anirudh finally remembers his address and decides to return to Tulsipur. Batuk abducts the twins from the hospital and decides to take them to Italy. Bondita, devastated upon finding her children missing, reaches the house, but is unable to enter as the door is locked by Batuk. She begs Batuk to give her children back to her. However, Batuk reveals his intentions and tries to burn Bondita alive but Anirudh reaches there in the nick of time and saves her. She reveals everything that had happened in the past six months when he was not with her. A furious Anirudh breaks the door and enters the house. After an emotional reunion with his family members, Anirudh slaps Batuk and expels him. The show ends on a happy note as Anirudh and Bondita take their twins in front of Durga's idol and declare that their children will also overcome the evil practices of society and become barristers like them.
