Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki (transl. Strength – feeling of existence) is an Indian social drama television series produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms and broadcast on Colors TV.[2] The show premiered on 30 May 2016 and is one of the longest-running Indian television serials of Colors TV.[3] It stars Rubina Dilaik, Jigyasa Singh and Simba Nagpal. The show is going off air on 1st October, 2021.[4]

Plot[]

Set in rural Punjab, the story begins with Maninder who tries to bury his 1 year-old baby daughter Soumya, and his mother Nalini also helps him. The two are caught by Maninder's wife Nimmi who saves Soumya and warns him.

8 years later[]

Soumya is a quiet and simple girl raised lovingly by Nimmi but hated by Maninder and Nalini. Her sister Surbhi is bubbly and happy-go-lucky, and gets all the love and attention in the family.

15 years later[]

Grown-up, Soumya is kept away from outside, only living in house with Nimmi and having almost no friends. Surbhi attends her studies and decides to teach a lesson to spoilt troublemaker, Harman. Vengeful, he plans to kidnap her but mistakenly kidnaps Soumya instead. His father Harak Singh orders him to marry Soumya, to avoid social embarrassment.

Nimmi is forced to accept the wedding. Soumya and Harman marry and eventually fall in love. Nimmi tells Soumya's secret to both her and Surbhi. Upon learning she's intersex having a complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, Soumya in shock tries to die but survives. She informs Harman, enraging him. However, they later bond as friends and their love starts to grow.

Harman's mother Preeto learns Soumya's truth and exiles her to kinnar society. Eventually, Harman finds and unites with Soumya. Nimmi dies of a cardiac arrest after being deeply traumatized by Preeto. Harman brings Soumya back to his home. Preeto refuses to accept and blackmails Soumya to get Surbhi and Harman married, as she wants a grandchild. Harman marries Surbhi who later divorces him.

Preeto makes a big revelation that 27 years ago, she was firstly married to Harak's elder brother Nihaal, but after he abandoned her for hermitage, she married Harak and bore him Harman and Raavi. Soumya and Harman adopt an orphan, Aditya. Preeto reveals Soumya's truth to the orphanage who takes Aditya away.

Harak brings Mohini, a dancer to separate Soumya and Harman but falls in love with her and sends Preeto out. Soumya rescues her during this difficult time. Preeto reforms and accepts her. Surbhi marries Varun. Mohini's truth is revealed. Preeto forgives Harak, returning with Harman and Soumya. Later after some other twists Preeto's mother Payal visits them and wants Soumya to get pregnant.

Upon knowing her truth, Payal tries to burn Soumya alive. Harman saves her again, opposing Payal, and leaves the house with her. Varun, Veeran and Balwinder beat and throw them into river. They are hospitalised but lose their memory. With no previous memories, their relation starts off on mutual dislike. Slowly they befriend and again fall in love. Eventually, they recall everything and unite.

Veeran is forgiven for his deeds; Balwinder and Varun are expelled from the family. Pregnant, Surbhi is back from Delhi. Varun confronts and pushes her. Gravely injured, she gives birth to Soham. Before dying, Surbhi hands over Soham's responsibility to Soumya, which she accepts. Varun tries to win Soham's custody, but is defeated after it is proved he killed Surbhi and cannot raise Soham well.

The long-lost Nihaal who was a hermit and now sits on road is seen by Soumya who, unaware that he is Preeto's first husband, brings him into the house. Preeto asks Nihaal to leave. While stepping out, he falls unconscious and dies. Preeto is asked to perform the rituals of a widow despite her marriage with Harak, as Nihaal hadn't divorced her. She develops hate for Soumya as Soumya brought him back.

Due to this and huge tensions in the house, Soumya takes Soham away and searches for work. She gets the job of being caretaker for the paralyzed Vedant Bansal, who is in wheelchair. His father Sunil runs business with Harman and Harak. Vedant earlier dislikes, but later falls in love with Soumya. His leg successfully recovers. He confesses his feelings to Soumya who rejects him.

Vedant falsely frames and gets Harman jailed and blackmails Soumya. Helpless, she agrees to fake marrying him for Harman's freedom. Upon bail, Harman thinks Soumya cheated on him by marrying Vedant (unaware that it is fake). Jealous, he marries Mahi. Vedant's sister Rekha comes from London with her husband Vidhaan and son Rohan.

2 months later[]

Harman has liver problems due to excessive drinking. Mahi is pregnant. Rekha learns Soumya's truth, and leaves to return to London with Rohan and Vidhaan. They face an accident. Rekha and Vidhaan unfortunately die; Rohan is injured. Bansal family is left depressed. Sunil reveals to Harman that Vedant's marriage is fake, and he'd blackmailed Soumya. Vedant tries to forcefully marry her.

Harman comes to save her. Vedant pushes him off a cliff and is arrested in. Though Harman is presumed dead, Soumya and Preeto couldn't believe he has gone. Soumya adopts Rohan as her nephew. She and Preeto unite. Mahi delivers an intersex child. On learning the truth, she wants to disown her. But Preeto and Soumya stop her. Soumya raises the child. Harak, unaware of her truth, names her Heer.

5 years later[]

Heer is a bubbly girl brought up by Soumya and Preeto. Vedant escapes for revenge, but is arrested again. Upon learning Heer's truth, Harak loses his temper and intends to kill her but instead shoots Soumya who falls into coma. Harak is arrested. Soumya recovers and reunites with Heer, Soham and Rohan. Maninder finally accepts Soumya.

Varun returns from jail and joins hands with Nalini. They take Soham and poison his mind towards Soumya. Maninder reveals to Soham that Varun killed Surbhi. Soham returns to Soumya and disowns Varun. Nalini also accepts Soumya, sorry for her mistakes. The police frees Harak as he wants to meet Preeto. He says her to send Soumya away if she wants him to accept Heer.

Preeto accepts the condition, gets Harak bailed and asks Soumya to leave the country. She agrees but vows to return after 16 years. The family bids her a tearful goodbye. On the way to the airport, she meets an accident planned by Varun but survives.

16 years later[]

Happy-go-lucky and beautiful, Heer is fiercely protected by Soham and Rohan. In her college, she befriends Virat. They fall in love, elope and get married. Their families don't like each other and keep them separated during the COVID-19 lockdown. When Virat and Heer try to commit suicide, the families accept them.

However Preeto reveals Heer's truth to Virat who begins to hate her. Heer moves on. Virat understands later that he can't stay without Heer. Eventually, they unite and remarry. Virat hides Heer's truth from her. Pregnant, Simran is asked to abort the baby. Heer stops this as she gets her married to Rohan.

Upon knowing Heer's truth, Tejinder joins hands with Maharani's disciple, Angel who kidnaps and plans to take Heer to Bangkok. In Goa, Heer is sold off to Indrajit Shergill. Virat rescues and brings her back. Tejinder reveals Heer's truth to the whole family. Finally, she also learns about her truth.

Devastated, Heer confronts Preeto for hiding her truth. Angel manipulates Heer to take part in a kinnar ceremony. Virat is shocked. Heer befriends Shyam, who secretly loves her. Virat abducts Heer from the kinnar community. While attempting to save him from Angel, Heer falls off a cliff and is presumed dead.

6 months later[]

Alive, Heer works in another city, as a babysitter of Kuhu, the young daughter of Dr. Akshay, who saved her. Upon knowing Heer's truth, Surmeet throws her and Akshay out of the house. Heer and Virat's families find out she is alive. Heer returns for him, ready to undergo a gender surgery to lead a normal life with Virat.

Angel brutally wounds and throws Virat and Heer into river. They're presumed dead. Angel succeeds in becoming the Guruma of intersex community. Mallika visits and begs the alive Soumya to come back to home. She returns after 18 years and promises to protect Heer. The family accepts her back, but she clashes with Mahi.

Harman, who is shockingly alive, also returns and reunites with the family after convincing them that he's the same Harman, even though his face has changed (because of the accident, he needed to get a face surgery done). Angel kidnaps Soumya; Virat and Harman save her. She and Harman unite with Heer. Angel is arrested. Reformed, Mahi divorces Harman and steps back.

Virat and Heer's college life resumes. Heer hires Gitu as a housekeeper. Daljeet assaults Gitu. Balwinder completes his jail sentence; Raavi accepts him back. He cheats by getting their property. Also later, he intends to kill Raavi but Soumya shoots him to death. Heer fights for Gitu's justice, but the two get kidnapped by Parmeet, Daljeet, Kareena and Sant Baksh.

Soumya finds a video of Heer's abduction. She, Virat and Harman team to save Heer. Soumya traps Kareena, who escapes but gets hit by a speeding car and is hospitalised. Before dying, she reveals that Parmeet killed Heer, and Daljeet and Sant Baksh shot Gitu and her father to death. Enraged, Soumya and Harman confront Parmeet. They begin their revenge by abducting and killing Sant Baksh
