Drashti Dhami (born 10 January 1985)[1] is an Indian model, actress, and dancer[3] who works in the Hindi television industry. Dhami is recognised for her roles in the shows Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi, Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani, Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil and Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka.[2]

In 2013, Dhami participated in Colors TV's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6 along with choreographer Salman Yusuff Khan and became the winner.[4]

Early life[]

Dhami was born on 10 January 1985 into a Gujarati family[5] in Mumbai, where she studied. She attended Mary Immaculate Girl's High School and also went to Mumbai's Mithibai College from where she has a degree in sociology.[6] Before entering into modelling, Dhami was a dance instructor[7] Dhami belongs to a conservative family. According to her interview in The Times of India, she said:

When I got [the] offer to dance in a music video ... I had to seek permission from ten different family members including my closest relatives. It was my cousin who supported me, convinced everyone and still stands by me whenever I have to take a decision on my career front. So it's not been so easy for me but my family's support is always with me."[8]

Career[]

2007–2011: Start of her career and debut show[]

Dhami started her career with modelling for print and television advertisements before debuting in the entertainment industry with her appearance in the music video for "Saiyyan Dil Mein Aana Re" followed by "Humko Aaj Kal Hai", "Teri Meri Nazar Ki Dori" and a Punjabi music video "Nachle Soniyo Tu" and worked in advertisements like Colgate with Saif Ali Khan, Lion Honey, Pulimoottil Silks, Vasan Eye care, RKS Grand (Shopping Mall), Amul, VIP Bags, Chevrolet, Reliance mobile and jewellery.[6]

Dhami made her acting debut on television with Star One's Dill Mill Gayye, where she portrayed Dr. Muskaan form 2007 until 2009. In 2008, she participated in 9X's relaity show, Kaun Jeetega Bollywood Ka Ticket by Ekta Kapoor as a contestant. In 2010, she appeared as the female lead in Star One's Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi opposite Gurmeet Choudhary.[6] Dhami got recognition with her portrayal of the character Geet with thiss role.[9] The show had a successful run for two years until it ended in December 2011 after the closure of the channel.[10]

Dhami made an appearance on Imagine TV's reality show Big Money: Chota Parda Bada Game in 2010.[6] She later in the same year was a part of another reality show, Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan.[11]

2012–present: Madhubala and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6[]

In May 2012, Dhami made a brief appearance through her dance performance for the show Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha. Later, Dhami played the lead role in the Colors TV show Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon opposite to Vivian Dsena from 2012 to 2014.[12][13] In 2013, Dhami participated in Colors TV's dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6.[14] She emerged as the winner alongside choreographer Salman Yusuff Khan.[15][16] In June 2014, Dhami presented Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 however within a month she got replaced by Manish Paul.[17] In December 2014, Dhami participated in Sony TV's Box Cricket League playing for Karan Tacker's team Mumbai Wariors.

In 2015, Dhami played the roles of Rani Gayatri and Savitri in Zee TV's Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani opposite Siddhant Karnick.[18][19] While playing the role of Gayatri, Dhami said:

"I do feel a little under pressure since 'Madhubala' was such a success. But I am also looking forward to seeing my fans' reaction to my new show. Even my family and friends are very excited," "It found it difficult to speak in the dialect which people spoke at that time. That was challenging. Other than that, I did not have any issues with the role."[20]

She left the show in May 2016.[21][22] The show ended in 2017.[23] In the same year, joined for a web series called I Don't Watch TV along with Karan Patel, Nakuul Mehta, Karan Wahi, Disha Parmar, Sanaya Irani, Kritika Kamra and many other tv celebrities.[24]

In November 2016, Dhami, joined Star Plus's Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil, by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms opposite Arjun Bijlani.[25][26] The show went off air in June 2017.[27] In December 2016, Dhami appeared in a short film The Change.[28] During an interview, Dhami said that she will not going to do kissing and bold scenes on screen, when asked the reason she told that this is her personal choice as she is not comfortable with it.[29][7] Much of her work in television serials has been in romance-themed shows.[30]

From June to October 2018, she played Nandini, a victim of domestic violence who falls in love with the husband of her best friend in Colors TV's Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka, along with Shakti Arora and Abhinav Shukla. A critic from India Today praised her, saying that she is equally good as the television actress Sriti Jha who also portrayed a victim of domestic violence.[31][32] In Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka and Geet Huye Sab Se Parai, Dhami portrayed two times on screen wife of Abhinav Shukla.[33] She left the show in November 2018.[34]

She was massively trolled on social media for her intimate scenes with Shakti Arora in Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka.

Other appearances[]

In 2011, Dhami (along with her Geet co-actor, Gurmeet Choudhary) made a guest dance performance on Rubina Dilaik & Avinash Sachdev's Chhoti Bahu - Sawar Ke Rang Rachi for a special Holi episode. Later in July 2011, she made an dance performance on Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo and later in December 2011, Dhami then made an appearance on Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani and danced along with Gurmeet Chowdary on the last episode which aired Abhay & Pia's wedding. In July 2012, Dhami made a guest appearance on Colors TV's Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha to promote her show Madhubala.

In March 2013, she made an guest appearance on Nach Baliye 5 to support her brother Jaisheel Dhami & her sister in law Suhasi Dhami who were contestants on the show.[35] In June 2014, Dhami was seen on Colors TV's Mission Sapne and later made another appearance in Comedy Nights with Kapil. In September 2015, she was seen as a guest contestant on the eighth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa to support Sanaya Irani.

Other work[]

Dhami was the brand ambassador for Canvironment Week 2011 and 2013 to support the cause of 'Save Our Planet'.[6] In 2016, she was part of the Swachh Survekshan 2017 Initiative for an environmentally cleaner India (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan).[36]

Dhami was also the captain for Team 'D' Celebrity Championship 2016, where six teams comprising 78 television personalities competed to help kids in need of education and food. She won, and received an award from 'I HELP A KID.COM' Celebrity Championship.[37]

In 2017, Dhami became the brand ambassador of Bajaj Brahmi Amla Ayurvedic Hair oil.[38]

Personal life[]

On 21 February 2015, Dhami married businessman Neeraj Khemka in a traditional Hindu ceremony.[40][41] Suhasi Dhami, also an actress, is married to her elder brother Jaisheel Dhami.[42][43] Dhami said that her in-laws are very supportive when it comes to her work.[44]

Bombay Times called her 'Numero Uno' actress on television.[8] Dhami is also known for her style and fashion sense.[45][46] Dhami is among the highest earning television actresses in India.[47][48] In 2011, she was voted the most desirable woman on television in polls conducted by TellyChakkar.com.[49] She is the brand ambassador of MATRIX India's hair colour brand, SoColor.[50][6]

Dhami was included in second place on "Television's Top 10 Actresses" list by Rediff.[51] Dhami also included in the top nine list of Indian television most stylish on-screen actress by Rediff.[52] The UK-based newspaper Eastern Eye placed her in their "50 Sexiest Asian Women" list. In 2012,[53] Eastern Eye placed her at twelfth position. Thereafter she remained in the top three spots for three consecutive years, listed at the third spot in 2013,[54] the second spot in 2014,[55] the third spot in 2015,[56] the fourth spot in 2016,[57] sixth spot in 2017,[58] and twelfth spot in 2018.[59] Dhami included in list of FHM India 100 Sexiest women of 2014 at 10th place.[60] In 2016, Dhami was nominated in "Sexiest Woman" list by FHM India.[61]

Dhami was listed eight among the "35 Hottest Actresses in Indian Television" by MensXP.com, an Indian lifestyle website for men.[62] She was ranked in 38th position in The Times of India's 2014 list of "50 Most Desirable Women".[63] According to the survey in India in 2017, Dhami was voted as desirable woman opposite to Hrithik Roshan in the list.[64]

Dhami received an offer to participate in Bigg Boss but she rejected it.[65] During her dance performance on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6, film maker Karan Johar compared Dhami to film actress Zeenat Aman.[66] Filmmaker Karan Johar complimented Dhami by saying that she is better than Kareena Kapoor when she performed in the song "Halkat Jawani" from the film Heroine on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6.[67] She is also known as Madhubala from her serial Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon and as Maaneet due to her chemistry with Gurmeet Choudhary.[68]
