Naagin (transl. Female serpent) was an Indian supernatural fantasy thriller television series produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms.[1] Spanning five seasons, the series airs on Colors TV and traces the lives of shape-shifting serpents.

The first season aired from 1 November 2015 to 5 June 2016.[2] It starred Mouni Roy, Arjun Bijlani and Adaa Khan as Shivanya, Ritik and Shesha.[3][4] It became one of the highest-rated shows on Indian television.[5]

The second season aired from 8 October 2016 to 25 June 2017.[6][7][8] It starred Mouni Roy, Karanvir Bohra and Adaa Khan as Shivangi, Rocky and Shesha.[9][10]

The third season aired from 2 June 2018 to 26 May 2019.[11] It starred Surbhi Jyoti, Pearl V Puri, Rajat Tokas and Anita Hassanandani as Bela, Mahir, Vikrant and Vish, respectively.[12][13][14]

The fourth season was introduced with a new title Naagin: Bhagya Ka Zehreela Khel. It aired from 14 December 2019 to 8 August 2020.[15] It starred Nia Sharma, Vijayendra Kumeria, Jasmin Bhasin and Rashami Desai as Brinda, Dev, Nayantara and Shalakha, respectively. It ended after 37 episodes post-lockdown.[16][17][18][19]

The fifth season aired from 9 August 2020 to 6 February 2021.[20] It starred Surbhi Chandna, Sharad Malhotra and Mohit Sehgal as Bani, Veer and Jay, respectively.[21]

A spin-off of the fifth season titled Kuch Toh Hai: Naagin Ek Naye Rang Mein was launched on 7 February 2021 replacing the same.[22]

Spin Off

A spin-off of the fifth season titled Kuch Toh Hai: Naagin Ek Naye Rang Mein was launched on 7 February 2021 replacing the Naagin 5.[23]

Plot

Season 1

Shivanya and Shesha are naagins who decide to avenge the death of Shivanya's parents for by the Raheja family. Shivanya marries Ritik and starts killing the murderers one by one. Shesha falls for Ritik and joins hands with Yamini. They frame Shivanya for murder to provoke Ritik against her. Shivanya and Ritik confess their love and consummate which makes Shivanya lose her powers. Sangram kills himself to give Shivanya her powers back. Shivanya kills Yamini, defeats Shesha and protects the naagmani.

Season 2

Three months later

Shivanya delivers her daughter, Shivangi in the third month of her pregnancy which shocks the doctors. Yamini is resurrected.

24 years later

Shivangi grows up with Shivanya and falls in love with Rocky, Yamini's foster son. Yamini murders Shivanya which provokes Shivangi and she decides to avenge her mother. Rocky joins Shivangi to kill Shesha and Yamini, but ultimately kills Shivangi under orders from Ritik. Shivangi feels betrayed and takes an oath to find out the truth about her death.

Season 3

Naagrani Ruhi unites with her lover Vikrant after 100 years and they are set to marry each other. However, Yuvraj and his friends molest Ruhi and attack Vikrant leading to his death. Ruhi is distraught but she vows to return for revenge.

Six months later

Vishaka Khanna, a rich investor arrives and attempts to kill Yuvraj, but he manages to survive. Mahir is compelled to marry Bela who is revealed to be Ruhi. She falls in love with Mahir. On finding out the truth about Bela's identity, Mahir is shattered. He loses his memory and forgets Bela after Sumitra bites him.

Six months later

Bela uses Naagmani to bring back Mahir's memories and they consummate their relationship. Sumitra seeks help from Hukkum who tries to impregnate Bela to give birth to a demon child. Vishaka takes Bela's place and gives birth to Taamsi, who grows up in a matter a seconds and kills Hukkum. Bela and Mahir obtain Naagmani but it is cursed by Shivangi. They can only obtain it after their reincarnation. Bela and Mahir die.

25 years later

Bela reincarnates into Shravani and Mahir reincarnates into Mihir. They unite with each other. Vikrant is killed by Taamsi and Sumitra. Learning Shivangi's story, Shravani tricks Ritik and Rocky to bring Shivanya to the temple and Shivangi returns to help Shravani. Yamini is killed by Shivangi. It is revealed how it was Shesha who killed Shivangi in the form of Rocky. Free from their guilt, Ritik dies and unites with Shivanya, while Rocky and Shivangi start a life together. Shravani kills Sumitra, Taamsi and Shesha and marries Mihir.

Season 4

Naagin princess Manyata marries Keshav a human, thus losing her power and gives birth to Nayantara. Keshav is killed by the Parekh family. Manyata escapes and waits for her daughter's 25th birthday to avenge her husband's murder. As due to Manyata's parent's curse she and her daughter must wait for 25 years to regain their powers.

25 years later

The Parekh family still fear the Naagin being alive and returning for her revenge. Manyata waits for her daughter Nayantara's 25th birthday.

Dev Parikh returns from Qatar to India. He meets Brinda there who he recalled was his childhood friend. However, Brinda had been engaged to Rajat. Nayantara waits to get her naagin powers, however, the powers go to Brinda instead, who is later revealed to have been switched at birth with Nayantara. Meanwhile, Dev who is son of Keshav's murderer, falls in love with Brinda. Nayantara discovers that Brinda is a Naagin and also Manyata's original daughter and all the Naagin powers are with her but not for Nayantara. Nayantara is shattered on learning that her mother would need Brinda more than her and thereafter, tries to kill her. Meanwhile, Parekh family comes to know that Nayantara is Manyata's daughter and they think Nayantara is the naagin but they don't stop her because they are aware of the fact that if a naagin marries a human her powers would decrease, unaware of the fact that it will only happen due to a curse. Vrushali and crew send their sons to kill Nayantara, and in the meantime they try to kill Manyata with the help of Brinda's father who is a priest. But Manyata reacquires her powers and tries to kill the Parekh family but Brinda comes in there and Parekh family escapes. Nayantara is killed by the Parekh family's sons. Manyata and Brinda are reunited and at first Brinda doesn't believe Manyata but witnesses Nayantara's death and vows that she will avenge her father's, father's family's and her sister's death and Brinda marries Dev to avenge her family's death.

Vishaka returns with the motive of getting Naagmani and saves Nayantara in order to capture the Naagmani as people who were born on Ashlesha star only can touch naagmani but eventually fails. Dev who was also born on that star accidentally touches the naagmani and it is stored on his head. Enraged and disappointed Vishaka captures Nayantara and traps her in a pillar. Vishaka enters Parekh's house with a grave motive. She creates misunderstandings between Brinda and Dev. Later she takes Dev's form and kills Manyata in front of Brinda making Brinda think it was Dev who killed her mother. Brinda vows avenge her parents by killing Dev and his entire family.

1 year later

Vishaka kills and takes Mundika's identity and power and gives Nayantara a new face and identity, Shalaka. Dev and Shalaka marry. Brinda realizes that Dev did not kill Manyata. Shalaka finds out that Mundika is Vishaka's new identity. Shalaka manages to frame Vishaka as the murderer and she is imprisoned.

Brinda and Dev confess their love. Dev asks Shalaka for divorce as he loves Brinda. Shalaka hypnotizes Dev to detach him from Brinda. Brinda's identity is revealed to Dev. Vishaka enters the Parikh house and murders the entire family under Brinda's disguise and spares Dev to obtain the Naagmani.

The very next day Brinda finds herself in the Rahasmayee Shiv Temple and is puzzled to see a dying Dev. Thereafter Vishaka and Shalaka enters the temple. Brinda finds out that Shalaka is Nayantara under a new identity. Shesha and Naagrani Shravani arrives to help Brinda and Dev. Vishaka is killed by Brinda and Naagrani Shravani while Shalaka is killed by Shesha. Dev dies too while leaving Brinda devastated. Naagrani Shravani summons Sarvashreshtha Aadi Naagin Naageswari. The four perform a tandav to impress Lord Shiva to obtain Naagmani from Dev. Naageswari narrates her story which happened thousands of years ago to Brinda in order to revive Dev.

Season 5

The story starts ten thousand years ago when eagles had the power to shape shift. When the eagles attacked the snakes to obtain Naagmani, Lord Shiva blessed the shapeshifting ability to snakes and named the first naagin to get this power, Naageshwari. She was in love with a naag Hriday while the prince of eagles, Aakesh falls in love with her despite the enmity between the clans. Aakesh plots to attack the snakes and get Naagmani. He enters the Temple with his force and kills Hriday with his army. However, he is killed by Naageshwari after which she is cursed by Lord Shiva for failing to protect other serpents but also gets boon to return after 10,000 years. She kills herself to return to unite with her lover after 10,000 years. On completing the story, Dev is brought back to life and he reunites with Brinda. The two return. According to the condition of Lord Shiva, Naageshwari has to take rebirth to complete her lovestory but the history was set to change this time.

40 years later

Naageshwari is reincarnated as Bani who has lost her parents while Hriday has reincarnated as Jay, a restaurant owner who has lost his parents too. Aakesh too has reborn as Veer. Veer messes up Bani's friend Noor's marriage after which he fights with Jay. Bani stops him and Veer falls for her while Bani continuously hates him. Veer is initially shown as a playboy but when he meets Bani, he calls her his "love at first sight" and becomes madly obsessed with her. Bani loses her calm after she sees Veer's brothers burying Noor's corpse. Veer plans to win Bani's love and marry her so he instead sends a marriage alliance for her sister Meera, knowing Bani would never let him marry her sister. Jay and Bani reach the Shiv Temple and remember the previous births where Jay is revealed to be her lover Hriday's reincarnation and they both realise Veer is in fact Aakesh's rebirth. So, Bani plans to marry Jay the same day as Veer and Meera. Out of jealousy Veer asks his brothers to kidnap Jay. Veer's twin brother Teer is released and he throws Jay down the cliff. Bani witnesses Jay's death and to seek revenge she kills Teer thinking him to be Veer. However, in reality, Shukla was the one who took Teer's life which no one was aware about. When Veer comes to know of his brother's death, he forcefully marries Bani and promises to torture her.

Jay is revealed to be alive and all the while faking his friendship with Bani to receive her powers. Jay poses many problems for Bani with his allies but Veer saves Bani each time and foils Jay's evil plans. Later, it was revealed to Bani that she is not Teer's killer and she told this to Veer. Veer's mother Chandrakala is exposed as to be Markaat who was Bani's biggest enemy from the Satyug era. It is later revealed that Jay is also her son. Markaat loses to Bani after Veer saves Bani and Jay pretends to help Bani. Slowly Bani appreciates the goodness in Veer and begins to like him. Markat is trapped in a cave but her evil powers endanger Bani and her family. Bani begins to like being with Veer and eventually falls deeply in love with him. She reciprocates his feelings and they consummate their marriage. But upon waking up the very next morning, Veer claims she means nothing to him, and it was all a lie from the start. Bani learns that Veer has been hypnotised by Maarkat's powers and returns him to normal.

Both Veer and Bani go through a series of test and trials before they finally get together. Towards the end Bani confesses her love to Veer, and they were meant to be together no matter where they go. The show ends with Veer and Bani dying after a shooting star falls on them but their child is delivered safely on earth. They see over their child and give blessings to their child and leave. Jay attempts to kill their child but fails and dies. True love of cheel and naagin creates a new history in the universe. Their love was strong and could not be defeated by anyone.

Season 3

Reception

In its launch week, the series topped the ratings charts. Season One proved to be highly successful.[26][27] The second season also topped the ratings chart in its launch week and continued to do so. Like first two seasons the third season also topped the ratings chart in its launch week and continued to do so for several months but when the third season was extended in February 2019 the season lost its top position in the TRP charts and even went out of the top five shows for several months but regained its top position in the last week. The fourth season topped the ratings chart in its launch week.[28]
