The Cholan Express is an Expresstrain operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. This train connects Chennai Egmore and Tiruchirappalli via Viluppuram, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

New LHB coaches has been installed for this train since 16 February 2017. This train is the successor of the very old train in that route known as "Day Express" which connected Madras Egmore and Tiruchchirappalli.

Relevance[]

Train is named after the Chola Kingdom which ruled over the regions through which the train passes. The Cholas ruled over their kingdom with headquarters at Thanjavur, Poombuhar.

The composition of Chennai Egmore–Tiruchchirappalli–Chennai Egmore Cholan express trains will be revised as detailed below. [2] COMPOSITION:AC First Class – 1, AC 2-tier – 3, AC 3-tier – 4, Sleeper class – 5, Second Sitting – 5, General Second Class – 3,coaches.[3]

Route and halts[]

This train is being operated via main line and hauled by diesel locomotive class WDG-3A or EMD-based WDP-4D from Chennai Egmore to Tiruchirappalli Junction. The train was formerly hauled by YAM-1 until the conversion of metre gauge into broad gauge. This train runs with RPM/ED WAP-7 from end to end with HOG technology (where power supply for the whole train will be given from the locomotive)
