Christiana High School (CHS) is a public high school in unincorporated New Castle County, Delaware and has a Newark postal address.[1] It is a part of the Christiana School District.[2] CHS serves a portion of Wilmington including the Shipley Run and West 9th Street historic districts and in the suburbs it serves parts of Brookside and Bear.[3][4][5][6][7]
History[]
Founded in 1963, Christiana High School is one of three traditional high schools in the Christina School District, the other two being Newark High School and Glasgow High School.[8][9] It is located outside of Newark near the University of Delaware.
Curriculum[]
CHS' curriculum focuses on agricultural and health sciences.[10] In accordance with the State of Delaware, Christiana students must complete the following credits to be eligible for graduation: 4.5 credits of electives; 4 credits of English and math; 3 credits of science and social studies; 2 language credits; 1 credit of physical education and an additional science or social studies course; and 0.5 health credit.[11] They must also complete the Senior Project and Student Success Plan (SSP) 3 credits of the Career Pathways program.[11] Seniors are required to complete a cross-disciplinary research project.[11]
In 2004, the Christiana School District was awarded a federal grant to create smaller learning communities to help improve the overall high school experience for students.[12][13] CHS and its sister schools offer fifteen career pathways, which help students focus on a specific area of interest: agricultural power and energy; allied health; animal science and management; AVID; banking; biotechnology; environmental science and natural resources; food sciences; Jobs for Delaware Graduates; marketing; Navy Junior ROTCS; performing arts (band and chorus); plant science; public and community health; and visual arts. This is meant to coincide with a student's potential postsecondary interests and help prepare them for higher education.[14]
CHS was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1984.[15]
The graduation rate at CHS is 69.92% as of 2021.[16]
Extra-curricular activities[]
CHS is part of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association and offers the following sports: football, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming, indoor track, wrestling, baseball, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and track and field.[17]
CHS has a number of student organizations including the Business Professionals of America, Future Farmers of America, Musical Theater, National Honor Society, NJROTC Drill Team, Odyssey of the Mind, and Science Olympiad.[18]
CHS' music offerings include: concert band, band, drum line, girls chorus, mixed chorus, piano, Viking Singers, Viking Steppers, marching band, and jazz band.[18]
