Concord High School (CHS) is a public secondary school located in unincorporated New Castle County, Delaware, United States, with a Wilmington postal address.[2] It is one of three high schools in the Brandywine School District.[1] There were 1,084 students enrolled in the fall for the 2019–2020 school year.[3] Mark Mayer is the current principal of Concord High School.[4]

History[]

CHS opened in 1967 in response to a rapidly rising population that produced too many students for Brandywine High School, then in the Alfred I. duPont District, to handle on its own.[5][6] Upon opening, it was located on the same campus as Hanby Junior High and taught only ninth and tenth grades.[7] Construction on CHS' own building was delayed due to a worker strike and did not open until January 1970, an entire semester after the planned date and still without its gym, auditorium, and swimming pool completed.[5][8][9] During the delay, CHS was forced to leave Hanby and move temporarily into Brandywine High School's building; the two schools taught on a rotating basis: BHS students attended in the morning and CHS students attended in the afternoon.[10]

Academics[]

Concord is a fully inclusive high school that offers a range of different levels of classes. Students can take classes at the Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, College Preparatory, Traditional, and Special Education levels, and a non-diploma track is also available. Concord offers 21 AP classes, the most of any school in the Brandywine School District.[11]

Courses that go beyond the AP level are also offered, including linear algebra and multivariable calculus.[12]

Student organizations[]

Students at Concord have the opportunity to join many curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities, including the following: Academic Bowl, Math League, Concord Technology Student Association, Science Olympiad, Anti-Bullying Solutions Team, Business Professionals of America, DECA, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Educators Rising, Kick Butts Generation, MIT Invent Team, and yearbook.[13][14]

Athletics[]

Concord is a member of Flight B of the Blue Hen Conference in the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA);[15] the Raiders compete in Class 2A, District 1 for football.[16] Concord fields a full slate of teams in all three sports seasons, including: crew, cross country, field hockey, football, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, track, swimming/diving, wrestling, baseball, golf, lacrosse, and softball.[17] Concord's Athletic Director is Larry Jacobs.[18] Concord, and all high schools in the Brandywine School District, are partnered with ATI Physical Therapy to provide sports medicine services.[19]

Music and arts[]

CHS has seven choirs: freshmen women's choir, concert choir, Bella Voce (audition- and girls-only), chorale, Madrigals, Sweet Adelinas (girls' a capella), and Barbershop (boys' a capella).[20] They also offer concert band, symphonic band (audition-only), wind ensemble, jazz band, Golden Raider Marching Band, and string orchestra.[21][22]

The Concord Players typically put on a play in the fall and a musical in the spring.[23] Previous performances include Singin' in the Rain, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Rumors, The Pajama Game, Charlotte's Web, Mame, You Could Die Laughing, Once Upon a Mattress, You Can't Take It with You, Anything Goes, Bone Chiller, Bye Bye Birdie, Meet Me In St. Louis, Legally Blonde, Shrek The Musical, Fools, Into the Woods, Noises Off, Disney's The Little Mermaid, You Can't Take It with You, The Music Man, You Can't Beat The House, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Play On!, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.[24]
