Clarivate is a public analytics company that operates a collection of subscription-based services, in the areas of bibliometrics and scientometrics; business / market intelligence, and competitive profiling for pharmacy and biotech, patents, and regulatory compliance; trademark protection, and domain and brand protection.[4] In the academy and the scientific community, Clarivate is known for being the company which calculates the impact factor,[5] using data from it's Web of Science product family, that also includes services/applications such as Publons, EndNote, EndNote Click, and ScholarOne. It's other product families are Cortellis, DRG, CPA Global, Derwent, MarkMonitor, CompuMark, and Darts-ip,[6] and also the various ProQuest products and services.

It formed in 2016, following the acquisition of Thomson Reuters' Intellectual Property and Science Business by Onex Corporation and Baring Private Equity Asia.[7] In recent years, the company has been noted for its acquisitions. In December 2021, it bought ProQuest for $5.3 billion.

Company history[]

Clarivate (formerly Clarivate Analytics) was formerly the Intellectual Property and Science division of Thomson Reuters. Before 2008, it was known as Thomson Scientific. In 2016, Thomson Reuters struck a $3.55 billion deal in which they spun it off as an independent company, and sold it to private-equity firms Onex Corporation and Baring Private Equity Asia.[8][9]

In May 2019 Clarivate merged with the SPAC to obtain a public listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)[10] It currently trades with symbol NYSE:CLVT.[11][12]

In 2020, Clarivate sold its Techstreet division to a for-profit subsidiary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.[13]

Acquisitions[]

  • June 1, 2017: Publons, a global platform for researchers to share recognition for peer review.[14]
  • April 10, 2018: Kopernio, AI-tech startup providing ability to search for full-text versions of selected scientific journal articles.[15]
  • October 30, 2018: TrademarkVision, provider of Artificial Intelligence (AI) trademark research applications.[16]
  • September 9, 2019: SequenceBase, provider of patent sequence information and search technology to the biotech, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.[17]
  • December 2, 2019: Darts-ip, provider of case law data and analytics for intellectual property (IP) professionals.[18]

The company said that the operational concept behind the acquisition was integrating ProQuest's products and applications with Web of Science.[22] Chairman of ProQuest Andy Snyder became the vice chairman of Clarivate.[23] The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, an advocacy group for open access to scholarship, voiced antitrust concerns.[3] The acquisition had been delayed mid-year due to a Federal Trade Commission antitrust probe.[24]

Products and services[]

Web of Science[]

Web of Science (WoS; previously known as Web of Knowledge) is a website that provides subscription-based access to multiple databases that provide comprehensive citation data for many different academic disciplines. It was originally produced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).

The Web of Science Core Collection consists of six online databases:[25][26]

  • Science Citation Index Expanded covers more than 8,500 notable journals encompassing 150 disciplines. Coverage is from the year 1900 to the present day.
  • Social Sciences Citation Index covers more than 3,000 journals in social science disciplines. Range of coverage is from the year 1900 to the present day.
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index covers more than 1,700 arts and humanities journals starting from 1975. In addition, 250 major scientific and social sciences journals are also covered.
  • Emerging Sources Citation Index covers over 5,000 journals in the sciences, social science, and humanities.
  • Book Citation Index covers more than 60,000 editorially selected books starting from 2005.
  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) covers more than 160,000 conference titles in the Sciences starting from 1990 to the present day[27]

Among other WoS databases are BIOSIS and The Zoological Record, an electronic index of zoological literature that also serves as the unofficial register of scientific names in zoology.

Web of Science includes other products providing data, analytics, insights, workflow tools, and professional services to researchers, universities, research institutions, governments, private and public research funding organizations, publishers, and research-intensive corporations.[28]

  • EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays, reports and articles.
  • EndNote Click (formerly Kopernio) is a freely available plugin allowing researchers to access papers in subscription-based scientific journals, to which they are subscribed to through their higher education libraries, even when the user is off-campus. Using artificial intelligence, the tool automatically records the institutional subscriptions each user has and searches for full-text versions of selected papers to which the user may have access.[29][30]
  • Publons is a commercial website that provides a free service for academics to track, verify, and showcase their peer review and editorial contributions for academic journals. It was launched in 2012 and was bought by Clarivate Analytics in 2017. It claims that over 200,000 researchers have joined the site, adding more than one million reviews across 25,000 journals.[31][32][33] In 2019, ResearcherID was integrated with Publons.[34]

Annual lists and reports[]

Highly Cited Researchers[]

Clarivate publishes an annual . The list compiles "the world's most influential researchers of the past decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Web of Science."[41] According to Clarivate, researchers are selected for their "exceptional performance" in one or more of 21 fields (those used in Clarivate Essential Science Indicators, or ESI) or across several fields. The 2019 list of Highly Cited Researchers was released on November 19, 2019.[42]

Clarivate Citation Laureates[]

Clarivate Citation Laureates formerly Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates is a list of candidates considered likely to win the Nobel Prize in their respective field. The candidates are so named based on the citation impact of their published research. Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates was established in 1989. The list pertains to likely Nobel Prize winners in medicine, chemistry, physics, and economics. There appears to be a correlation between high citation rates for a published researcher and the award of prestigious accolades. Furthermore, citation rates disclose researchers furnishing instrumental contributions that advance the science of their respective field. Finally, choosing one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of the highest impact papers winnows the analysis to the topics and people most likely to be selected by Nobel selection committee.[43][44][45]

From 2002 to 2020, 59 individuals listed as Citation Laureates have received Nobel prizes.[46]

Journal Citation Reports[]

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is an annual publication integrated with the Web of Science and is accessed from the Web of Science-Core Collections. It provides information about academic journals in the natural sciences and social sciences, including impact factors. The JCR was originally published as a part of Science Citation Index. Currently, the JCR, as a distinct service, is based on citations compiled from the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index.[47]

Top 100 Global Innovators Report[]

The annual Top 100 Global Innovators report identifies the world's most innovative organizations. These businesses have successfully developed valuable patented inventions that also have strong commercialization potential based on market reach and impact on other downstream inventions. The 2020 Top 100 Global Innovators Report was released on February 19, 2020.[48]
