Communities in the Halifax Regional Municipality

The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia is composed of more than 200 communities and neighbourhoods. As of the 2016 Census, the municipality has a landmass of 549,035 hectares (5,490.35 km2) and is home to 403,131 people.[1]

The urban area (population centre) of the municipality consists of Bedford, Dartmouth, Halifax, and their respective environs. Halifax's urban area is the most built-up area of the municipality, and is the largest urban area in Atlantic Canada. The landmass of the urban area is about 23,472 hectares (234.72 km2), and is home to 316,701 people as of the 2016 Census.[2]

The urban core (Regional Centre) of the municipality is the semi-ring of built-up area inside Highway 111 in Dartmouth, and the Halifax Peninsula. The Regional Centre is only 33 km2 (13 sq mi),[3] but is home to 96,619 people as of the 2016 Census.[4]
