Crewe Engineering and Design UTC is a university technical college located in Crewe, Cheshire, England.[1]
The UTC is sponsored by Manchester Metropolitan University, Bentley Motors Limited, OSL Rail and Engineering Service and several other local engineering and design companies. It opened in September 2016.[2][3]
Context[]
Crewe is a small Cheshire town with a significant railway and engineering history.[4] Crewe railway station has 23 trains an hour stopping, including 5 to London Euston and 4 to Manchester Picadilly. The HS2 will have dedicated platforms. In 1842 the Grand Junction Railway (GJR) moved its locomotive works from Edge Hill to Crewe, siting the works to the north of the junction between the Warrington and Chester lines. To house the workforce and company management the company built the town of Crewe as we know it the north of the works. In the 1860 John Ramsbottom, had become Locomotive Superintendent. Locomotive construction was concentrated at Crewe. Ramsbottom built a steelworks, the first in the world to make large-scale use of a continuously operating the Bessemer plant. He introduced mass-production techniques, whereby as many parts as possible were identical between one engine and another.[5]
Description[]
It was established to address the shortage of youngsters entering engineering in 2016, and has been rated good by Ofsted. It however fails to attract many youngsters, and remains two thirds empty.[6]
