"Diamonds" is a song by American trumpeter Herb Alpert from his 27th studio album Keep Your Eye on Me (1987). The song features lead and background vocals by American singers Janet Jackson and Lisa Keith, and was written and produced by American songwriting and record production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Four tracks on Keep Your Eye on Me were produced by Jam and Lewis, who melded Alpert's sound with their own Minneapolis funk. This song marked a comeback for Alpert.

"Diamonds" was released as the second single from Keep Your Eye on Me on March 14, 1987,[1] by A&M Records, and soon became a hit, peaking at number four in Canada and the Netherlands. In the United States, the single was a number-one hit on the Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance/Disco Club Play charts, and peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its successor, "Making Love in the Rain", would reach number 35 on the Hot 100 in September 1987.[2] It was a modest hit in countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, peaking at numbers 47 and 27, respectively.

Chart performance[]

"Diamonds" was a hit in the United States, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number one on the Hot Black Singles.[3] The single also went to number one on the Hot Dance/Disco Club Play and Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales charts in the U.S.[4] "Diamonds" was also a hit in countries such as Canada and the Netherlands, but a more modest chart success in countries like Australia and the United Kingdsom.

Music video[]

In the music video, Alpert appears in "Bucky's" nightclub, where the DJ plays his new single. The song is a hit with the crowd, and Alpert and his band perform on stage. Meanwhile, Jackson heads back to the club in a limo, though Jackson herself does not appear in the video; a look-alike is used for the limo scenes and the silhouette of Jackson in the club. A child breaks through the look-alike's silhouette and performs as Jackson.

Live performances[]

Jackson included the song on her sixth concert tour Number Ones, Up Close and Personal (2011), and as a DJ interlude on her seventh concert tour Unbreakable World Tour (2015–16).
