Excelsia College (formerly Wesley Institute) is a tertiary education provider in Sydney, Australia offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in counselling, performing arts (drama and music), teacher education and business.

History[]

Wesley Institute was founded in 1983 by Dr. David Johnston as a part of the Sydney Christian Life Centre. It was known at the time as the "International Institute for Creative Ministries" (IICM). In 1989 Dr. David Johnston parted ways with IICM, bringing the organization under the auspices of Wesley Mission. A series of name changes finally resulted in the current name 'Wesley Institute'.

Government accreditation was granted in 1992, allowing Wesley Institute to offer Advanced Diplomas, Diplomas in Ministry and the Creative Arts and the Graduate Diploma in Christian Counselling.

Under the supervision of then Wesley Mission Superintendent Rev the Hon Dr Gordon Moyes AC MLC, Wesley Institute moved to its current Drummoyne location in 1994 - transforming the old Drummoyne Boys School into a fully equipped campus for tertiary education. Wesley Institute for Ministry & the Arts was set up by Wesley Mission, Sydney in 1983 as a Christian Institute to train students for both ministry and the creative arts.[1]In 2016, it relocated to Macquarie Park, New South Wales.[2]

Government accreditation was granted in 1992.

On 4 October 2013, the Board of Trustees for Indiana Wesleyan University voted to acquire Wesley Institute, to create the IWU's first international campus.[3] In early 2015 Wesley Institute changed its name to Excelsia College.
