Plot[]

Two best friends embark on a weeklong vacation to Fire Island – the famous gay escape destination off the southern shore of Long Island – accompanied by cheap rosé and a small group of eclectic friends.

Production[]

On September 25, 2019, it was announced that the now-defunct streaming television network Quibi was developing a comedy series titled Trip starring, created, and written by Joel Kim Booster.[1][2] The project was given a series order on March 11, 2020, with Jax Media set to produce.[1] On April 15, 2020, Bowen Yang was cast in a lead role. Booster and Yang, who are both openly gay Asian comedians and "life-changing" friends, were set to play fictionalized versions of themselves.[3][4] Additionally, Closet Monster filmmaker Stephen Dunn was attached to direct the series.[3] However, the project was put in turnaround after the shutdown of Quibi on December 1, 2020.[5]

On June 30, 2021, it was announced that Searchlight Pictures had purchased Booster's script to produce it as a feature film re-titled Fire Island. Spa Night director Andrew Ahn replaced Dunn as director[6] The following month, Margaret Cho joined the cast of the film.[7] Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Tomas Matos, Torian Miller, and Nick Adams were added to the film in August 2021, with Zane Phillips, Michael Graceffa, Aidan Wharton, Peter Smith, and Bradley Gibson joining the ensemble cast.[8] Principal photography began on August 12, 2021, and was scheduled to last through September 2021, with filming taking place in New York City, Brooklyn, and Fire Island, the location referenced in the film's title.[9]

Release[]

The film is set to be released on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in international territories in 2022.[8]
