"Flatline" is a song recorded by Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado and released by Nelstar on February 17, 2017, as the third single from her sixth studio album The Ride.[2] The single was written by John Congleton and Nelly Furtado. The lyrics is about a lover who thinks of her lost love as a loss of the vital sign and begs for her love interest to resuscitate her. Furtado explained that this song is one of her favorites from the album.[3] In her interview for The Globe and Mail, she also mentioned that, "there was that place where "you're not feeling anything any more, and you know something's wrong. It was the genesis of "Flatline."[4]

Reception[]

Christoph Büscher of Medium.com stated, "This midtempo track was likely chosen as the second single from The Ride because it’s by far the poppiest moment on the record. The verse melodies of “Flatline” are indeed amazing. That being said, the chorus and the lyrics are a little too safe."[5] Lillian Andemicael of The Diamondback wrote, "On “Flatline,” Furtado equates the loss of a loved one with the loss of her vital signs. Her reminders of the void left by her lover are matched with colorful beats that uplift the song. While not the best example of Furtado’s imaginative lyricism, the song asserts the singer’s confidence early on the release, as the track engages its listeners with its atypical structure, empowering them despite its themes of loss."[6]

Katherine St. Asaph of Pitchfork Media added "“Flatline” is a subversion in the Swedish pop style: one loud chorus, complete with snare-drum fireworks and “Two Weeks” piano pep, set to the line “I don’t feel nothing at all”—the song equivalent of a Hyperbole and a Half cartoon."[1] Craig Jenkins of Vulture observed, "Lead single “Flatline” races with synth embellishments whose reverberations slip in and out of time with the song’s plodding beat."[7]
