"Phoenix " is a song recorded by Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado[1] and released by Nelstar on March 10, 2017, as the fourth single from her sixth studio album The Ride.[2] The song is a piano ballad[3][4] written by John Congleton, Nelly Furtado, and Mark Taylor. The song themes are inner strength and renaissance.[4]

Reception[]

Christoph Büscher of Medium.com stated, "The verses are amazing, and Nelly’s vocals truly shine. But the rise-like-a-phoenix-metaphor? Really? That was already old in the fifties."[5] Mike Wass of Idolator wrote, "Each buzz single from comeback LP, The Ride (due March 31), has been better than the next. Her hot streak continues with achingly beautiful piano ballad, “Phoenix” — a track that harks back to the understated approach of Folklore." Da'Shan Smith of Billboard added, "Phoenix," the standard edition's ethereal, closing, Cyndi Lauper-esque ballad -- a nice go-to for fans of the softness of "All Good Things (Come to an End)" -- provides an opportunity for her similarly heartbroken listeners to move on and "rise" like the majestic bird, reminding them, "You're gonna be all right, again."[6]
