"Pipe Dreams" is a song recorded by Canadian singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado. It was released on December 20, 2016 as the first teaser for her sixth studio album, The Ride (2017).[2] The single was produced by John Congleton.[3]

Composition[]

"Pipe Dreams" is described as a mid-tempo, gospel-tinged R&B song.[1][4][5] It closes with an organ solo.[3][5] According to Furtado, the single talks about the false hope of dreaming.[6] The single has a theme of a fantasy world.[4] Furtado said about the lyrical content:

"A lot of [The Ride] touches on that, in terms of sanity versus reality. The comedown, the hangover after the rush, and how you put the pieces back together, and how you make amends with the realer parts of life."

Reception[]

Christoph Büscher of Medium.com wrote, "The first single to be lifted from The Ride is a dreamy ballad that, upon its release, impressively demonstrated Nelly’s change in musical direction. With lines like “don’t sell me no pipe dreams, I wanna live in a kaleidoscope” and a dramatic sound, “Pipe Dreams” may not be the best song on the album, but it’s certainly a fitting lead single."[7]

Music video[]

The music video for "Pipe Dreams" was released on December 20, 2016.[8] It is filmed through a VHS lens.[9]
