Football broadcast in India

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Football broadcast in India is dominated by branded sports networks Star India and Sony India on television and OTT platforms.[1][2] Indian sports rights market was worth around $1.1 billion in 2019 (with the digital videos accounting for around 20% share).[2] However, non-cricket (football, kabaddi, tennis, badminton, and wrestling) events only represent 13% of the value of sports rights.[1][2] Football usually takes a distant second spot in Indian on-ground sponsorship revenue (around $20 million in 2019).[3] Television audience figures remain highly important in India (though branded sports networks are pay-television broadcasters, they generate a large portion of their revenue from advertising).[4]

“Star Sports had bagged the English Premier League rights in 2013 for $145 million over three years, or just over $48 million per year, before renewing the deal in 2016 until the 2018-19 season at an undisclosed amount. Assuming the rights value doubles for the next cycle to around $100 million per year, it’s still less than half of what the IPL [cricket] media rights are expected to go for.

Sony has great global properties, but they are very niche for the Indian market...Those properties don’t have the kind of numbers that will make an impact for the channel...FIFA tournaments don’t happen too frequently. The Champions League gets interest only towards the latter stages, and the matches take place late at night in India.”
