Glory Days is the fourth studio album by British girl group Little Mix. It was released on 18 November 2016 by Syco Music and Columbia Records.[1] Musically, the album utilises dance-pop,[2] tropical house[3] and R&B. The album was preceded by the single "Shout Out to My Ex", which became the group's fourth number-one single in the United Kingdom.

The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and stayed there for five weeks, spending the most weeks at number one by a girl group album since the Spice Girls' debut album 20 years earlier, as well as becoming the fastest-selling number-one album by a girl group in 15 years, and recording the highest first-week UK album sales for a girl group since 1997. The album later set a record for the most weeks spent inside the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart by a girl group album. It has since been certified triple platinum in the UK for sales of 900,000 units.

Outside of the United Kingdom, it peaked at number one in Ireland and charted inside the top ten in Australia and New Zealand. The album was reissued on 24 November 2017 as Glory Days: The Platinum Edition, which included the single "Reggaetón Lento (Remix)" with CNCO, remixes of three other previously released singles, three new songs, and a bonus documentary titled Glory Days: The Documentary. At the 2017 Brit Awards the group received three nominations for the album's singles, winning British Single of the Year for "Shout Out to My Ex".

Singles[]

The lead single "Shout Out to My Ex" was released on 16 October 2016, and was premiered on the day of release by a live performance on The X Factor results show before it was made available to download along with the pre-order of the album.[4] The song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart.[5] and remained at number one for three consecutive weeks.[6] It topped the charts in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Israel, and peaked within the top ten of the charts in Australia and New Zealand. It also charted in 20 other countries, including the United States, where it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 69, becoming their second-highest charting single there after "Black Magic". The single received two Brit awards nominations, and gave Little Mix their first Brit Award win, winning British Single of the Year at the 2017 Brit Awards. It has since been certified triple platinum in the United Kingdom and Australia, double platinum in Ireland and Brazil, as well as platinum in Canada and Norway. It has also been certified gold in Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Poland, and New Zealand.

On 5 December, the group announced "Touch" as the second single from the album. The single peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart. "Touch" also peaked within the top ten of the charts in the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, and charted in 12 other territories. The song has since been certified double platinum in the United Kingdom, Brazil and Australia, and has received one platinum and four gold music certifications in other countries.

On 1 March, the group announced they would release "No More Sad Songs" as the third single from the album. The new mix of the song featured American hip-hop artist Machine Gun Kelly. Despite minimal promotion, the song charted at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. The song peaked at number four in Scotland, and charted in the Philippines and Ireland. The song has since received a platinum certification in both the United Kingdom and Brazil.

On 19 May, Little Mix announced through their official Twitter that "Power" would be released as the album's fourth and final official single on 26 May. Two hours after the announcement of the single's release, they announced that the single release of "Power" would be remixed, with an added feature from English grime act Stormzy. The song peaked at number two in Scotland, number seven in New Zealand, and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart, which became the group's eleventh top 10 single in the United Kingdom, and the third from Glory Days. The single also reached the top 20 in Ireland and Belgium, as well as the top 40 in Latvia and the Philippines. It has become a female empowerment song and was used as one of the theme songs for WWE's Royal Rumble 2018 event. The song has since been certified double platinum in Brazil and the United Kingdom.

On 24 November 2017, the album was reissued as Glory Days: The Platinum Edition and featured the single "Reggaetón Lento (Remix)". The song topped the charts in Bulgaria, Sweden, Romania and Slovenia, and peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart, becoming CNCO's first top ten single and Little Mix's twelfth. Elsewhere, the single also charted in the top 10 in Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Lebanon, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Scotland, and charted in 20 other countries. It has since been certified triple platinum in Brazil, double platinum in the Netherlands, platinum in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and certified gold in Australia, Belgium, Poland, Mexico and Portugal.

Promotional singles[]

The album included five promotional singles. "You Gotta Not" was released as the first promotional single on 27 October 2016.[7] The song debuted at number 61 on the UK Singles Chart in the week beginning 4 November 2016.[8] "F.U." was released as the album's second promotional single on 4 November 2016.[9] The song debuted at number 82 on the UK Singles Chart in the week beginning 11 November 2016.[6] "Nothing Else Matters" was released as the third promotional single on 11 November 2016.[10] "Touch" was released on 15 November 2016 as the fourth promotional single of the album, before being released as the second official single of the album.[11] "Nobody Like You" was released on 16 November 2016 as the fifth promotional single of the album.[12] The sixth and final promotional single, "Down & Dirty", was released on 17 November 2016.[13]

Promotion[]

Promotion campaigns were arranged for fans in the UK, Australia, the US, France, Netherlands, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Finland and Singapore, called the Glory Days Road Trip.[14]

The Glory Days Tour[]

The group embarked on The Glory Days Tour in support of the album. The UK leg of The Glory Days Tour was announced on 14 October 2016, and began on 27 October 2017.[15] The European leg—which took place in May and June 2017—was announced in November 2016. A leg in Oceania took place in July 2017.[16][17] To promote the album, the band performed at the Jingle Bell Ball and on The X Factor, and embarked on The Glory Days Tour which ran from May to November 2017. The tour grossed $42,000,000 after selling 810,810 tickets, becoming the group's highest grossing tour.

The Guardian called the album "chart pop perfection" and went on to describe the message of the album as "substantial as Girl Power once was".[21] AllMusic stated that Glory Days "nfinds the group delivering a set of hooky, smartly crafted songs that balance swaggering, '60s-style R&B with stylish, electronic-tinged dance-pop". They also added that "Little Mix's vocal grit and sassy group chemistry make Glory Days such a celebratory album".[18]

In another positive review, Digital Spy wrote "Little Mix have put together their most personal album yet, without sacrificing big hooks, a mainstream pop sensibility and plenty of sassy attitude." The article continued by saying "Glory Days hears four young women come together with a very real bond, making their message all the more believable."[19] The Evening Standard praised Little Mix for surviving with their fourth studio album, writing "Glory Days mostly sticks to their winning formula", and adding that "the foursome have carved out a pop niche for themselves".[20]

Digital Spy considered Glory Days the 12th best album of the year.[25] Time Out went on to say that the album "has already earned its super-confident title", with the chart-topping single "Shout Out to My Ex" and added that "Little Mix sing brilliantly and sound like they’re having a ball. Long may their glory days continue".[23]

Commercial performance[]

In the United Kingdom, Glory Days became the group's first UK number-one album, and with 96,000 sales in its first week in the UK, it was the fastest-selling album since David Bowie's Blackstar in January 2016. This record was broken two weeks later by the Rolling Stones.[26] It was the fastest-selling number-one album by a girl group in 15 years, since Survivor by Destiny's Child, and had the highest first-week UK album sales for a girl group since 1997.[27] Glory Days spent a total of five non-consecutive weeks at number one in the UK Albums Chart, the longest run at the top by a girl group album since the Spice Girls spent 15 weeks at number one with Spice in 1996. It later broke the record for most weeks spent in the top 40 of the UK Albums chart by a girl group album.[28] All four of the album's singles have been certified platinum or higher by the British Phonographic Industry, making Little Mix the only other girl group apart from the Spice Girls to have all the singles from one album achieve at least platinum status in the United Kingdom.[29] In 2016 the album was ranked as the seventh best selling album of the year, the fourth-best selling album of 2017, and the 30th best selling album of 2018 in the UK by The Official Charts.[30][31][32]

The album also reached number one in Scotland and Ireland, and debuted at number two in Australia,[33][34] It reached the top 10 on the Dutch, New Zealand, and Spanish albums charts,[35][36][37] and also charted in 16 other countries. In the United States, the album peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 200.

In the United Kingdom the album has sold over a million copies, and has earned a triple platinum music certification. It has also been certified double platinum in Ireland and certified platinum in Brazil and Denmark. It has also been certified gold in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Norway, and Switzerland.
