Golf in Russia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first mention of golf in Russia dates back to the reign of Nicholas II. It is said that the tsarist family often took mini-golf lessons when they stayed in their summer residence in Virolahti.

The first 18-hole golf course appeared in the suburban area of Nakhabino located near Moscow only in 1994, it remained the only one in the country for a long time.

Golf in Russia had not been widespread up to 2006 (the period when active construction of golf clubs began in the country).

Now there are 32 golf courses in Russia. The distinctive feature of Russian courses is that most of them are the work of the best world architects, they are perfectly manicured and harmoniously match the rich nature of Russia. Now golf is gaining its popularity, children's and adult golf schools are opening, international tournaments are being held.

The world community learned that there is golf in Russia when Russian golfer Maria Verchenova was among the participants of the 2016 Olympic Games. In the 4th round Maria made a hole-in-one and set a record of the Olympic course, showing the best round among men and women.[1][2] A contender for the 2020 Olympic Games is Nina Pegova (PGA status), in 2019 she entered the top-10 female golfers of the LETAS tournament.
