Imlie is an Indian television drama series that premiered on 16 November 2020 on Star Plus,produced by Gul Khan.[1] It stars Sumbul Touqeer Khan and Gashmeer Mahajani .[2] The series is a loose adaptation of Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ishti Kutum.[3]

Plot[]

Famous journalist, Aditya Tripathi visits Pagdandiya to interview Satyakam. Imlie a young 18-year-old girl shows him around. A storm forces them to spend the night together and the villagers misinterpret this and force them to marry. Aditya returns to Delhi and Imlie introduces herself as a domestic servant and purpose to find her estranged father. His family likes her bubbly nature. On the other hand, Aditya strives to tell his fiancée Malini the truth about the forced marriage.

On Aditya and Malini's wedding day, Imlie's parents Meethi and Satyakam arrive in Delhi. Imlie refuses to return to Pagdandia. Aditya decides to reveal his marriage to Malini, but she stops him. Seeing Malini happy with Aditya, she watches the wedding proceed. Aditya returns to Pagdandiya for another interview. Aditya offers money to Imlie for her work as a maid, but she refuses it. The villagers ask for forgiveness for the forced marriage and then adi and imlie perform a ritual together as husband and wife,where adi ties the nupatial chain around imlie's neck and they remarry.When aditya character assasinates imlie during their wedding night,imlie speaks back that she too is victim of the marriage,but unlike adi she never blamed him.Adi understands imlie,feels bad for behaving bad with her for these much days .She saves him from a bomb blast and next day she is severely wounded by a bullet as she tries to save Aditya from an intruder. Meethi and Satyakam tries to take Imlie to the hospital but they are stuck in a clash with the police. Aditya rescues Imlie and takes her to the hospital,His behaviour towards her changes and becomes much soft to her unlike before .It is revealed that Malini's father Dev, years before when he visited Pagdandia,he had lied to meethi that he is unmarried and used her and left her.Dev gets to know that Imlie is his and Meethi's daughter. Anu tries to find out Dev's relation with Imlie, but fails.Dev reveal to his mother that Imlie is his and Meethi's daughter.

Radha and Harish's estranged son, Nishant returns from London after ten years. Rupali ,adi's cousin sister whom her husband cheated on with another girl attempts suicide on valentines day, but Imlie saves her and advises about loving yourself if no one is with you. Imlie overhears the Nishant discussing his leukemia diagnosis with his doctor. Imlie is persuaded to keep this a secret. The family throws Imlie a surprise birthday party.

A bus carrying Malini crashes and she is trapped under a tree. Imlie rescues Malini, but is injured. Aditya was covering the accident details ,but when the moment he found out imlie is missing,he breaks the rules and saves imlie and did'nt notice malini.Dev rescues Malini meanwhile.The family praises Imlie's bravery. Imlie starts preparing for college entrance examinations. Imlie helps aditya in finding the underworld people who was responsible for the bridge collapse. Adi when thought imlie does deserve to live as a maid in his house,asks to remarry someone else,imlie leaves the house.The news gets out.Adi is kidnapped by them and imlie on the way sees this and saves him.When adi find her in a bus to pagdandia,he asks her to comeback,to which she refuses and breaks the ties with him.After imlie's departure,he feels sad and something is killing him.He decided to go to pagdandia and find out.

Aditya realizes Imlie is his real love and life partner,where as malini was just a friend of him and since nishant left,he found a friend in her and misunderstood it as love.He never felt those feelings in the 7years which he is feeling now in imlie.He confesses to Imlie.Aditya is shocked to learns that Dev is Imlie's father ,Malini and Imlie are half sisters.Meethi too found out that dev was married. But imlie refuses to accept adi because of malini and rejects him.Adi comes back to Delhi,realising his life was colorless and imlie added colors to it.He starts avoiding malini as it will be cheating to imlie.When imlie comes back to Delhi,adi forces her to come with him,to which she agrees on a condition he should not break the vows he told for malini.Rupali overhears Imlie and Aditya talking and learns the truth about their marriage and supports them.Imlie comes 2nd in the state for entrance and gets admitted to City College.She is honored by Home minister for her achievements.

Malini becomes rude to imlie ,passing classist comments,starts scolding her since adi did'nt give her the attention she wants,What malini wanted to hear was adi's token i love you's since she was obssessed with him.She pre assumes adi loves imlie beacuse of this reason, attempts suicide to guiilt trip him by becoming a bride.Imlie donates her blood to save malini.Anu humiliates Imlie in the hospital and expels her from the ward thinking she is the reason. Anu suggests that Malini will return to Aditya if Imlie leaves the house. Imlie agrees and goes to stay with them knowing she is not safe there. Anu slaps imlie when she sees adi dropping off her in bike.Meanwhile,to know the truth,Malini lies that she has a boyfriend and becuase of that guilt,she tried to suicide. Adi reveals to malini that he loves imlie and she is his first wife. Malini then decides to divorce Aditya.Meanwhile anu does domestic violence on imlie by hitting her head with tubelight.Imlie leaves.When Satyakam knows that adi was cheating on imlie by marrying malini,he tries to kill adi,later saved by imlie.Adi then reveals to sathyakam and meethi about the whole story and he was redeemed and accepted.Then he convinces them to marry .After the marriage,sathyakam is arrested.Malini leaves to pagdandia to know dev's truth,lieing to meethi she is imlie's teacher,Kalpana and promises her tha she will give back imlie's right for both her husband and father and gets to know about dev is imlie's father. She confronts Dev. Upon learning that Imlie is Dev's daughter and Anu asks Malini to not accept Imlie but she refuses. Malini forces Dev to tell the truth to Imlie. However, he has a heart-attack and Anu blames Imlie.

Imli, Aditya and Malini reaches Advocate For Aditya and Malini's divorce where Imli meets Advocate K. C. ( Kunal Chauhan) a criminal lawyer has agreed to file . Anu files a mental torture case against Tripathis but are bailed by Imlie showing her physical abuse video. Anu and Dev are shocked to learn about Malini and Kunal affair so Anu threatens him to break his relationship with Malini.Kunal starts having feelings for malini and she starts hugging him,calling him baby and starts playing with his feeling.She thinks of kunal and reads Kunal chauhan instaed of Prithviraj chauhan while preparing notes.Adi and imlie believes they are real pair. On Aditya's birthday, Nishant's ex-girlfriend Pallavi arrange the catering. Pallavi ask Nishant the reason for breaking relationship with her. Finally, their family accept their relationship with imlie's help.During all these imlie excels in her education,becaoming student of the month,aditya helps her in studying.

Later, Nishant and Pallavi are shocked to learn about Aditya and Imlie's marriage and promised them that they will support them. Aparna invites Meethi to Nishant and Pallavi's wedding. Where Anu secretly visits there and is shocked to learn that Meethi is Imlie's mother and Dev's secret girlfriend and thus humiliates her in front of Aditya and Imlie.Soon, Imlie is shocked to learn when Anu reveals that her father is Dev Chaturvedi and realises that Dev is her father and Malini is her half-sister. She is heartbroken that Malini will hate her when she will come to know that Imlie is her half-sister with whom she has to share her husband. But Aditya consoles Imlie and supports her that none will do anything wrong to her and that he is always with her. Anu shows adi and imlie's hugging picture to Tripathis.Aditya reveals the truth to them and in anger,takes 7 vows with imlie(marriage).They refuse to accept this relationship.Malini reveals to them that Imlie is Dev's illegitimate daughter without imlie's consent.

To win Tripathis heart, Imlie decides to take part in 'best bahu competition',which was aparna's dream.In the competition Anu disqualifies Pallavi, and then she even tries to disqualifies Imlie, but Pallavi saves her. The second round of the 'best bahu competition is couple dance. When Imlie and Aditya do dance, the irked Aparna tell Radha that they have to stop Imlie and Aditya from doing the couple dance, or there reputation in front of whole society will become bad.Imlie wins the 3rd round and wins the competition.Aditya writes an article about Terrorist Anand,their men decides to kidnap Adi. Anu kidnaps adi and tortures him.Malini knowing this did'nt reveal it to Tripathis.The terrorists kidnaps adi from there and demands to release Anand.Imlie tries to meet homeminister by peaceful method,while malini wears marriage signs and using her father's contacts,she meets the minister and lies to him she is his wife,imlie might have a crush on adi,that's why lieing to him adi is her husband.Malini scolds imlie because she wants to be called as adi's wife.While imlie single handedly rescue adi with sathyakam's help and brings him back.malini feels bad that adi likes imlie only and did'nt credit her.Soon, Anu manipulates Malini against Imlie and she becomes more obsessed with adi,trying to win back adi.Kunal becomes heartbroken that malini wants adi back and don't wants to divorce him.Malini and Anu fakes suicide and adi takes her to tripathi house thinking she need support.Malini starts playing dirty games by by sleeping on Aditya's bed, without adi's consent which imlie sees ,but did'nt took it in a bad way.Kunal reveals the fake boy friend truth to aditya. Malini tells Aditya that she still loves him,but as a friend only,lies to get back aditya and took out imlie from his life.

Development[]

Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ishti Kutum was remade in Hindi language on StarPlus as Mohi by White Horse Productions which aired from 2015 to 2016 which did not garner good viewership.[4][5] However, by 4 Lions Films, producer Gul Khan remade the series again as Imlie for StarPlus stating, "I know you have heard and seen this before, many times, but we’ll play it more real."[6]

Filming[]

The filming of the series began in October 2020.[7] The series is based on the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh and mainly filmed at sets in Mumbai.[8]

On 14 April 2021, due to the sudden strict COVID regulations set in by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, shooting of all serials were asked to halt. Imlie Team moved Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad and conducted their shoot there till the next hearings.[9]

The first promo of the series was released on 27 October 2020 and featured the leads.[10]

Critical reception[]

ThePrint praised the series along with few other few Hindi series as revolutionary saying, "They appear to have taken a few tentative steps out of their dream bubble and hit the ground stumbling, just like Imlie did as she raced through the fields on her way to the village school, her grandmother's admonishments hastening her strides."[11]
