The Al Faridia University (Urdu: جامعه فریدیه) is an Islamic University situated near the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, the university was established in 1971 by Maulana Abdullah Ghazi, who remained Chancellor until he was assassinated by unknown gunmen in October 1998, and as of 2021 it is the Largest Madressa in Islamabad and has 1,700 students and more than 60 teachers.[1]
History[]
In 1966, a small seminary was established at Lal Masjid by Maulana Abdullah Ghazi, in which there were about 20 to 25 students for the Hifz class. After some time a need was felt to have a bigger place for running this seminary so that a large number of students who were increasing with the passage of time could be accommodated. Hence a place in the meadows of the Margalla Hills in Sector E-7, was acquired with the help and cooperation of Seth Haroon Jafer (Late). This piece of land was attached to an old Mosque. Consequently, a madrasa was constructed and started its operation. In 1971, the seminary was shifted to the present building and it was named "Jamia Faridia" and later became known as "Al Faridia University". Maulana Abdullah Ghazi remained chancellor until he was assassinated in the courtyard of Lal Masjid by unknown gunmen in October 1998.[2]
Following Maulana Abdullah's assassination, his son Maulana Abdul Aziz who at the time was serving as Vice Chancellor became the new chancellor and appointed his younger brother Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi as Vice Chancellor and under his leadership, the University began offering classes in English, science computers, as well as Qur'an, Ghazi himself is said to have taught history and philosophy.[3][4]
Over the years Faridia has had many Patrons including Saudi Leader Abdullah Omar Nasseef, Former Grand Mosque Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Subail and Pakistani Scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan who was a friend of Faridia's Founder Maulana Abdullah Ghazi, and had visited the Seminary multiple times, and under his patronage several project at Faridia were completed, these project include The Construction of a Road leading to the Seminary, a Track leading to The Faisal Mosque and The Expansion of Faridia's Kitchen and Pantry.[3]
