Jeffrey D. Waldstreicher (born December 31, 1979 in Silver Spring, Maryland) is an American politician from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party. He is currently serving in his 1st term in the Maryland Senate, representing Maryland's District 18 in Montgomery County after serving two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates.^[1]

In the legislature[]

Elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010 and 2014, Jeff Waldstreicher is a State Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly, where he serves on the Judiciary Committee. He chairs the Special Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and the Land Use and Transportation Subcommittee. In the legislature, his priorities include creating jobs, balancing the budget, and investing in education. He is a member of the Education Caucus and Veterans Caucus. His legislative district includes Chevy Chase, Kensington, Wheaton, Silver Spring, Garrett Park, Garrett Park Estates, and portions of Rockville and Bethesda.

Background[]

Professionally, Waldstreicher is a practicing attorney. He represents clients in complex litigation matters in both state and federal courts at the pre-trial, trial, and appellate stages. Before striking out on his own, Waldstreicher practiced at a large, international law firm.

Waldstreicher has dedicated hundreds of hours to pro bono representation. He represented the NAACP in a suit to stop widespread discrimination during an annual gathering of African American motorcycle enthusiasts. He has also represented parents in complex adoption proceedings and victims of domestic violence.

Waldstreicher is a volunteer and active member of the community. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy. He also served as Chair of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, Chair of the NAACP's Legal Redress Committee, Pro Bono Counsel to the Sierra Club, and on the board of the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA).

A member of multiple bar associations, Waldstreicher received his Bachelor of Arts Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University in Political Science and History. He received his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he was an editor of the law review.

A lifelong resident of Montgomery County, Waldstreicher grew up in the Layhill neighborhood of Silver Spring and attended Montgomery County Public Schools. He lives with his wife, Joanna, and their two-year-old twins, Kate and Eli, in the Rock Creek Palisades neighborhood of Kensington. They are active members of Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase, where Waldstreicher served on the Social Justice Committee and as a substitute Hebrew School teacher.
