Jellyfish Pictures is a global VFX & Animation Studio (with studios in London, Mumbai and Sheffield), delivering critically acclaimed work for clients that include Disney, Netflix, DreamWorks Animation, Apple TV+, HBO, Sky, the BBC and Amazon.
History[]
Jellyfish Pictures was founded in 2001 by Philip Dobree and Will Rockall, with a team of three artists and one producer [3], moving to their first studio in Soho, Central London in Poland Street in 2003.[4] In 2005, they started their first long form TV series The Story of One, [4] following this with work on the BBC series Fight For Life in 2007, for which they won multiple industry awards including a BAFTA, RTS and VES award for 'Outstanding Visual Effects.[4] Over the next few years they continued to expand, working on the long form CGI series Planet Dinosaur for the BBC and Discovery Channel in 2011, [4] followed by multiple nominations and wins for their work on Inside the Human Body in 2012.[4] In 2017 Jellyfish Pictures launched its own original content division, Jellyfish Originals - focused on the development, distribution, rights management, financing and commercialisation of original animated properties.
The company has undergone rapid growth in recent years. In 2022, Jellyfish Pictures joined Key Capital Partners over a minority investment, expediting the global scaling of Jellyfish Pictures' VFX and animation teams, and advance the development and production of its original kids and family content through Jellyfish Originals.[5] David Patton joined Jellyfish Pictures as CEO in December 2022 while Mark Warburg joined as COO.[6] The on-location studio locations have also expanded significantly, with a studio division opening in Sheffield in 2020 (overseen by animation director Kevin Spruce), and a new Mumbai studio recently opening in 2023.
Jellyfish Pictures’ VFX credits include blockbuster movies such as The Creator, Asteroid City, and multiple titles from the Star Wars franchise, with television projects that include work on Stranger Things, The Book of Boba Fett, The Rig, The Nevers, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Witcher: Blood Origin, as well as the upcoming series Nautilus.
Jellyfish Pictures has produced high-quality CG animation for DreamWorks Animation on both Spirit: Untamed and How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (for which they won an Annie Award for 'Best Animated Special Production') as well as work on top-rated children’s shows, Dennis & Gnasher: Unleashed (CBBC), Floogals (Universal Kids) and Bitz & Bob (CBeebies)
Jellyfish Originals, is currently in pre-production on upper preschool series Stan & Gran for Milkshake!, with an adaptation of author and presenter Dermot O’Leary’s book series, Toto the Ninja Cat also in development. The animation division is currently in production on a series for Netflix / Lime entitled Wereworld, based on a popular book series by Curtis Jobling and an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits for Netflix. It has also recently started production on a new feature animation for a Hollywood studio.
