Jens Schröter (born 22 January 1970) is a German media scholar. He holds the Chair of Media Cultural Studies at the University of Bonn, Germany.[1]

Scientific career[]

Schröter studied theater, film and television studies, art history and philosophy at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. He received a dissertation scholarship from 1997 to 1999 and was a research assistant at the Endowed Professorship for Theory and History of Photography, University of Essen, from 1999 to 2002. In 2002, Schröter received his doctorate with the thesis Das Netz und die Virtuelle Realität. Zur Selbstprogrammierung der Gesellschaft durch die universelle Maschine. From 2002 to 2008 he worked as a staff member at Forschungskolleg 615 (Medienumbrüche), University of Siegen, in the project Virtualisierung von Skulptur: Rekonstruktion, Präsentation, Installation.

In 2008 Schröter habilitated with the monograph 3D. History, Theory and Aesthetics of the Transplane Image. In the same year he was appointed to the professorship for theory and practice of multimedia systems at the University of Siegen. From 2008 to 2012, Schröter was head of the graduate school Locating Media and was subsequently one of the applicant researchers of the DFG Research Training Group Locating Media (2012–2021). From 2010 to 2014 he was (together with Lorenz Engell, Bauhaus University, Weimar) head of the DFG research project Die Fernsehserie als Reflexion und Projektion des Wandels. Since April 2015, Schröter holds the Chair of Media Cultural Studies at the University of Bonn.[2]

In April/May 2014, Schröter was a John von Neumann Fellow at the University of Szeged, Hungary. In September 2014, he was a visiting professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou, China. In the winter semester 2014/2015, Schröter was Senior Fellow at the DFG Research Training Group Medienkulturen der Computersimulation at Leuphana University of Lüneburg with the research project Kulturen des Berechnens / Politiken der Simulation. In the summer semester 2017, he was Senior Fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna with the research project Die Unordnung und das dreidimensionale Bild. In the winter semester 2017/2018, Schröter was Senior Fellow at the International College for Cultural Technology Research and Media Philosophy in Weimar with the research project Die operative Ontologie des Individuums. Since 2016, he has been the spokesperson for the project jointly applied for with Stefan Meretz (Commons Institute, Bonn), Hanno Pahl (Economic Sociology, Lucerne/Munich) and Manuel Scholz-Wäckerle (Complexity Economics, Vienna) at the Volkswagen Foundation Die Gesellschaft nach dem Geld. Eröffnung eines Dialogs. From 2018 to 2021, together with Anja Stöffler (Mainz University of Applied Sciences), Schröter led the DFG research project Van Gogh TV. Erschließung, Multimedia-Dokumentation und Analyse ihres Nachlasses. In the winter semester 2021/2022, he will have a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies, Bochum.

Schröter's research includes theories and history of digital media, theories and history of photography, , three-dimensional images, media theory in discussion with value criticism, audio media and auditory culture, and television series. His publications have been translated into numerous languages (including English, Chinese, Hungarian, Turkish).[3]
