Jonathan Ray Banks[1] (born January 31, 1947)[2] is an American actor. His first notable film roles were in the films Airplane! (1980), 48 Hrs. (1982), and Beverly Hills Cop (1984). He has received critical acclaim for his role as former police officer turned private investigator, fixer, and hitman Mike Ehrmantraut in the television series Breaking Bad (2009–2013), its spin-off series Better Call Saul (2015–present), and its sequel film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019). He is also known for his breakthrough role as Frank McPike in Wiseguy (1987–1990).[3]
He has received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (1989, 2013, 2015–2017, 2019) for his work on all three series, making him the only actor with nominations as a main cast member for three shows in this category, two of which feature him as the same character.[4]
Early life and education[]
Banks was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Chillum Heights, Maryland. He was raised by a single mother, Elena Adams Banks (October 13, 1917 – September 16, 2012), who was a secretary in various federal government offices including the CIA. She was also a private secretary for top Naval officers such as Admiral Chester Nimitz.[5][6] He graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring, MD in 1966,[7][unreliable source?] and attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he was a classmate of actor Kevin Kline. During that time, they participated in a production of The Threepenny Opera together.[1] Banks dropped out of the university to join a touring company of Hair as a stage manager. He toured Australia with the Hair company.[8]
Career[]
1974-1990: Early roles and recognition[]
In 1974, Banks moved to Los Angeles, where he performed on stage before picking up bit parts.[citation needed] That year he acted in the public service announcement (PSA) Linda's Film on Menstruation.[9]
In 1977, Banks acted in The Girl in the Empty Grave,[10] and Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn.[11]
In 1978, Banks acted in Who'll Stop the Rain,[12] The Cheap Detective,[13] and Coming Home.[14]
In 1979, Banks acted in The Rose,[15] The Ordeal of Patty Hearst,[16] and She's Dressed To Kill.[17]
In 1980, Banks acted in Airplane!,[18] Rage,[19] Desperate Voyage,[20] and Stir Crazy.[21]
In 1981, he appeared as Dutch Schultz on the NBC series the Gangster Chronicles.[22]
In 1982, Banks acted in 48 Hrs.,[23] and Frances.[24]
In 1984, Banks acted in Gremlins,[25] Beverly Hills Cop,[26] and Buckaroo Banzai.[27]
In 1985, Banks acted in the short-lived science fiction series Otherworld, as Kommander Nuveen Kroll.[citation needed]
In 1986, Banks acted in Armed and Dangerous.[28]
In 1987, Banks acted in Cold Steel.[29] Also that year, Banks had a break the television series Wiseguy, in which he played Frank McPike until 1990.[citation needed] The role led to a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.[30] Although his character was primarily the hero's mentor, stories occasionally featured McPike as hero.[citation needed]

In 1994, Banks acted in an episode of the television show Matlock,[36] Highlander: The Series,[37] Walker, Texas Ranger,[38] and Tales from the Crypt.[39]
In 1995, Banks acted in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory,[40] and the television film Shadow of Obsession.[41]
In 1996, Banks acted in Flipper,[42] Dark Breed,[43] and Last Man Standing.[44] That year he returned to the role of Frank McPike in the television film Wiseguy.[45]
In 1997, Banks acted in the sitcom Fired Up.[citation needed] Also that year, he acted in A Thousand Men and a Baby,[46] and Melanie Darrow.[47]
In 1999, Banks acted in Harvey,[48] Millennium Man,[49] Foolish,[50] Let the Devil Wear Black,[51] Thrash,[52] and Outlaw Justice.[53]
In 2001, Banks acted in Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles,[54] Face to Face,[55] and Downward Angel.[56]
In 2003, Banks acted in Dark Blue.[57]
In 2007, Banks acted in Jam,[58] and Reign Over Me.[59]
In 2008, Banks acted in Proud American.[60]
During this time, according Nolan North, Banks was originally considered to play the role of Zoran Lazaravić in the video game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), but the role instead went to Graham McTavish. According to North, the main factors that influenced this decision were Banks' height and the arrival of actor Steve Valentine as Harry Flynn.[61]
In 2009, the second season of Breaking Bad started.[citation needed] Banks appeared as Mike Ehrmantraut. He became a series regular for the third, fourth, and fifth seasons.[citation needed] For his role , he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 2013 ceremony.[62]
In 2013, Banks acted in Identity Thief.[63]
2014-present day: Current work[]
In 2014, he had a recurring role as Buzz Hickey in the fifth season of the NBC sitcom Community.[64] Also that year he acted in Bullet,[65] and Horrible Bosses 2.[66]
In 2015, he voiced James Gordon in the video game Batman: Arkham Knight,[67] and was a guest on the MythBusters episode "Supernatural Shooters".[68] Also that year, Banks reprised his role as Mike Ehrmantraut as a regular in the Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul.[69] At the Emmy Awards, for his role, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at their 2015,[70] 2016,[71] 2017,[72] and 2019 ceremony.[73]
In April 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Indiana University.[74] Also that year, he acted in Term Life.[75]
In 2017, Banks acted in Mudbound.[76] With his co-stars, they were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.[77]
In 2018, Banks acted in The Commuter,[78] and Incredibles 2.[79]
Banks joined the cast of the Netflix animated series F is for Family in its fourth season as Bill Murphy, the father of the main character Frank Murphy.[80]
Personal life[]
Banks married his first wife, Marnie Fausch, in 1968.[citation needed] Together, they had one daughter.[citation needed] After his divorce in 1970, Banks married second wife Gennera Banks sometime after 1990. From this marriage, they had fraternal twins. Banks also has a stepdaughter from this marriage.[2][1]
He lost his house during the 2018 Woolsey Fire.[81][82]
