KMRE-LP (102.3 Low power FM) is a radio station broadcasting local and regional educational, cultural and historic programming. The station is located in Bellingham, Washington.

KMRE-LP focuses on supporting local voices and music programs, cultivating local programming that provides educational and cultural training to its audience and training and educating the community about radio and audio production. The station also airs music and programs from the Golden Age of Radio and music which is rarely heard elsewhere. KMRE-LP welcomes participation from community members and promotes creativity among its staff, talent and volunteers.[1]

The station is an all-volunteer organization, so people give what they can – some only a few hours a month, others nearly full time. From audio engineers, to computer savvy people; DJs, News Writers, journalists, social media experts; the community makes this station possible. Bringing a special mix of local media to the Pacific Northwest.

The FCC granted KMRE-LP its license on July 19, 2006.[2]

Programming[]

Featuring music from all over the Pacific Northwest and More, KMRE-LP also features local news programming and other work from all around Whatcom County. The station strives to lift community voices and be a resource to community members in and around Bellingham, WA.

Programing is primarily focused on local content produced by volunteers around Whatcom County and the Pacific Northwest. There are also nationally syndicated programs – featuring exclusive shows that bring a broad spectrum of other information to listeners in the community.

Local Programming includes, but is not limited to: Bellingham Podcast; Speak Up, Speak Out; Crina & Kirsten Get to Work; Children Of The Setting Sun; Spark Science Now; Community Voz.

Specialty Music Programming: Progressive Rock Psychedelic Beatles Pop Show, Fourth Corner Jazz, Bluesland, Gumbo YaYa, Off Beat Music Hour, Artifacts from the Psychedelic Dungeon, Upfront Soul, International Americana Music Hour.

Music can be sent in to the station by different artists, record labels, and other organizations.[3]

The meaning behind the call sign for KMRE is the Museum of Radio and Electricity. Broadcasting since 2005 in Bellingham, WA; The station began as part of the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention developing a rich collection of local and cultural media. The station initially broadcast music and programming from the Golden Age of radio – the 1920s through the advent of television, but evolved to share programming on a wide range of diverse topics.[4]

As a community-oriented, low-power radio licensee, it was important for the station to show its commitment to Local Stories, and has become a communication resource for many local organizations providing a platform for people. Today, KMRE continues as an all-volunteer, listener supported, independent community media organization, focusing on enabling un-served and under-served voices and giving them a place to be heard in part by Kulshan Community Media.[5]

Over the years, KMRE has contributed to a number of different events around Whatcom County. From the Subdued Stringband Jamboree, hosting live music at different venues, endorsing the Pacific Northwest music scene, and helping lift community voices and leverage different media resources. In 2018, KMRE moved to new studios in the Bellingham National Bank building, with a new transmission site atop the Bellingham Herald building broadcasting to the entire city and many outlying areas. KMRE is also online, anywhere in the world, at www.KMRE.org.
