Lakelands railway station is a proposed railway station for the Mandurah railway line om the Transperth network as part of the Metronet project, located in the Mandurah suburb of Lakelands, Western Australia, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of Mandurah railway station. It is planned to start construction in 2021 and be open in 2023.[1]

History[]

When the Mandurah railway line was built in the 2000s, land was set aside in Lakelands for a future station.[2]

In December 2020, ADCO Constructions was announced as the preferred contractor to build and design Lakelands station.[3][4] In January 2021, ADCO Constructions was awarded the contract.[1] In May 2021, initial designs were revealed.[5][6] The station started early works on 1 August 2021, with the modification of overhead power line and earthworks.[7][8] Major construction is planned to begin in October 2021.[9] The station is planned to be complete in 2023.[9][6]

Station design[]

The station's platforms are to be two side platforms, set in a trench with a pedestrian overpass at ground level. A car park with 400 bays will be to the west of the station, as well as a sheltered bus interchange with eight bus bays and a bike shelter. Facilities available upon opening in 2023 will include public toilets, a payphone and vending machine. There are provisions for a kiosk, fare gates, escalators, more lifts and a customer service desk to be built in the future once there is enough patronage.[2][10]

Despite calls from City of Mandurah councillor Ahmed Zilani for there to be a multi-storey car park at Lakelands station, one is not planned. Mandurah MLA David Templeman and Canning MP Andrew Hastie said the planned 400 bay car park is adequate, due to the station being more accessible on foot or by cycling than Mandurah station.[11][12]

To reduce the impact on the Mandurah line during construction, the station will have a modular design, and will have several parts constructed offsite.[13]

Services[]

Lakelands Station will be served by Transperth Trains operating along the Mandurah railway line to Perth and Mandurah stations.

The station is projected to have 2,300 boardings per day when it opens, and 3,500 boardings per day in 2031.[7][8]
