Liberalism in Peru

This article gives an overview of liberalism in Peru. It is limited to liberal parties with substantial support, mainly proved by having had a representation in parliament. The sign ⇒ means a reference to another party in that scheme. For inclusion in this scheme it isn't necessary so that parties labeled themselves as a liberal party.

Introduction[]

Traditional liberalism began with the Progressive Club in 1855. The Liberal Party of Peru was founded in 1882.

The timeline[]

National Union[]

  • 1900: a faction seceded as the ⇒ Liberal Party.

Liberal Party[]

  • 1901: left the ⇒ National Union and formed the Liberal Party (Partido Liberal).

Liberty Movement[]

  • 1987: Mario Vargas Llosa formed the Liberty Movement (Movimiento Libertad), a faction agreed to set up an electoral alliance with clerical fascists, thus betraying

liberalism. It is still active and has members in the government in exile. It claimed 8 million members in 2021.

  • 2021: For 20 years it had been a socialist party. From January 2021 it has claimed to be a liberal party.
