List of administrative counties and county boroughs of England by population in 1971
This is a list of administrative counties and county boroughs of England by population as at the 1971 census. Three county boroughs, which had been formed in 1889 due to the Local Government Act, 1888, were abolished and absorbed into newly created London Boroughs on 1 April 1965. These were the county borough of Croydon, the county borough of East Ham and the county borough of West Ham, Croydon merged with the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District to form the London Borough of Croydon, and East Ham and West Ham merged, along with small parts of other local areas to form the London Borough of Newham.
