The rolling stock preserved on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is used to operate trains on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), a heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England. There is a variety of preserved steam and diesel locomotives and diesel multiple units, passenger coaches and goods wagons. Some are owned by the railway itself but most are owned by various individuals or voluntary groups. The line is also regularly visited by locomotives based elsewhere. Some come for a day on a railtour, others for a few days or weeks to take part in a special gala, but a few stay for many months and form part of the stock working scheduled trains.

Notes[]

1. The locomotive can haul trains on Network Rail, only on the 6 miles (9.7 km) of the Esk Valley line from Grosmont to Whitby. Or on the 19 miles (31 km) route from Whitby to Battersby via Grosmont during special events.
2. Some mainline certified/non mainline certified locomotives are not permitted to run on the line to Whitby due to various technical reasons, which may include: high axle weight exceeding the bridges maximum load on this route; the route's curves are too tight and may damage the locomotives driving wheels, etc.
3. Certified for full mainline use on the National Network besides the Whitby to Battersby sections.
4. Loco not permitted to operate over the mainline due to flange less centre driving wheels and route curves being too tight which could cause a derailment.

Returned to service in 2013 after a major overhaul; however a cracked cylinder block led to 29's withdrawal from traffic. Returned to service in August 2019.

BR 2-6-0 Class 4MT	76079	BR lined black, early emblem		Operational	Yes (1), 2014-2021	Built in 1957. Recently undergone a mid life boiler overhaul and returned to full service in December 2014.[citation needed] Boiler ticket expires in 2024. Mainline certified for Esk Valley and Whitby running.
BR 2-6-4T Class 4MT	80136	BR lined black, early emblem		Operational	No	Built in 1956. Boiler ticket expired in 2008 and moved from Crewe Heritage Centre in April 2016. The remainder of its overhaul was carried out at NYMR, and it passed its steam test on 21/07/16. The locomotive entered service in August 2016. Boiler ticket expires in 2026.
SR 4-6-0 Class S15	825	SR lined olive green		Operational	Yes (1), 2019-2026	Built in 1927. Several parts of the locomotive are from sister engine, S15 No. 30841. Previously certified for Whitby-Battersby running, but since firebox repairs in June–July 2010, it was restricted to regular NYMR services. Returned to service in September 2019, mainline certified for Esk Valley and Whitby running.
BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0	92134	BR unlined black (late crest)		Operational	No (all 9f's are banned from mainline use due to flangeless middle wheels)	Built 1957. Originally based at the NYMR after departure from Barry, but left in the early 80s and was subsequently restored at a range of sites before returning to the NYMR for completion. Owing to the engine now being kitted out with the required mainline equipment to run on the Esk Valley Line it worked the rest of its boiler ticket running only on the NYMR between Grosmont and Pickering. Its previous boiler ticket expired on 1 January 2018. Following sale from the NYMR to Peter Best in Feb 2020 the engine is now undergoing an overhaul for mainline operation between Grosmont, Whitby and Battersby.

Moved to the NYMR for overhaul by owner, the artist David Shepherd, he agreed to sell it to the trust. Locomotive was Mainline certified between Whitby and Battersby only to cover Esk Valley Line running. Returned to service in 2012 following overhaul. Withdrawn November 2015 due to a cracked firebox. Overhaul began in July 2018.

The NYMR is home to many historic carriages from vintage Hull and Barnsley stock to London and North Eastern Teak carriages. The British Railways carriages and younger carriages are usually mainline certified. This section is currently under construction.

NER	1111	Six-wheel luggage composite	Under restoration	Built in 1890 at York. It was withdrawn in 1924 and converted to a tool van and lost its centre wheelset. Preserved from Bishop Auckland in 1973 by the NER Coach Group. The coach was kept at Levisham while a slow restoration progressed. It was later donated to the LNER Coach Association. In February, 2019, 1111 was moved to the Stainmore Railway, at Kirkby Stephen East, on a 30-year loan for restoration to commence and when restored, will run there in service for the remainder of the loan. During the restoration, the coach will return to a six-wheeler.[3][4]

Withdrawn from service in April, 2007 after sustaining damage in an incident, but was back in service three months later. Repairs were taking place in late April 2017 but was in service again in August, 2018. Restored in LNER Teak livery as No. 43087. Will be moving to Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in late 2019.[7][8]
NER	945	Open Third	Under Restoration	Built in 1924 at York. Preserved in 1973 by the NER coach group. Stored at Levisham station. Under a steady restoration since 1999.
