The Shard is the tallest building in the UK

As of June 2021 there are 137 habitable buildings (used for living and working in, as opposed to masts and religious use) in the United Kingdom at least 100 metres (330 ft) tall,[1] 107 of them in Greater London, 14 in Greater Manchester, 5 in Birmingham, 3 in Leeds, 2 each in Liverpool and Woking, and 1 each in Brighton and Hove, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Swansea (the only such structure outside England).

The Shard in Southwark, London, is currently the tallest completed building in the UK and was the tallest in the European Union until the UK's departure; it was topped out at a height of 310 metres (1,020 ft) in March 2012, inaugurated in July 2012 and opened to the public in February 2013.

The UK had not been noted historically for its abundance of skyscrapers, with the taller structures throughout the country tending to be cathedrals, church spires and industrial chimneys. Despite this, since the late 20th century, the number of high-rise buildings in many large British cities has grown significantly, most notably in London and Manchester.

The UK's tallest office buildings are located in the City of London and the capital's secondary business district of Canary Wharf. The five tallest are 22 Bishopsgate (278 m), One Canada Square (235 m), 110 Bishopsgate (230 m), 122 Leadenhall Street (225 m) and 8 Canada Square (200 m). The five tallest residential buildings in the UK are London's Landmark Pinnacle (233 m), Newfoundland Quay (220 m), Valiant Tower (215 m), One Park Drive (205 m), and Manchester's Deansgate Square (201 m). Landmark Pinnacle is the sixth tallest residential building in Europe.[2]

London and Manchester are currently the only UK cities with skyscrapers taller than 150 metres (490 ft).[3]

As of November 2021, there are 35 habitable buildings at least 100 metres (330 ft) tall under construction in the UK – 26 in Greater London, 7 in Greater Manchester and 2 in Birmingham.
