The Republic of Macedonia (officially under the provisional appellation "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", abbreviated "FYR Macedonia") participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their entry was selected through an internal selection, organised by the Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT). Macedonia was represented by the song "To the Sky" performed by Tijana, which failed to qualify from the second semi-final, placing 13th with a score of 33 points. The song was written by Elena Risteska, Darko Dimitrov and Lazar Cvetkoski.

Before Eurovision[]

Internal selection[]

On 28 August 2013, MRT announced that they had internally selected Tijana Dapčević to represent Macedonia in Copenhagen during the MRT evening news programme Dnevnik.[1] Dapčević had previously attempted to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest on several occasions by competing in several Macedonian national final selections over the years: in 1996 with the song "Ti prostuvam" which placed third, in 2002 with the song "Izgrev" which placed fourth, and in 2005 in the artist selection. She also competed in the 2006 Serbian and Montenegrin national final with the song "Greh", which placed eighth.

Dapčević received over 50 songs from composers across the Balkan region, and it was announced that she would perform the song "To the Sky", written by Darko Dimitrov, Lazar Cvetkoski, Elena Risteska and Laura Rosca, at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. "To the Sky" was presented to the public during a special edition of the MRT programme Hit na mesecot (Hit of the Month) hosted by Marko Mark and Aleksandra Jovanovska, which took place on 22 February 2014 and was broadcast on MRT 1, MRT Sat and online via the broadcaster's official website mrt.com.mk.[2] In November 2013, Dapčević stated that she favoured all three songs received from Darko Dimitrov, and that her contest entry would be called "Pobeda" (Victory).[3] However, it was later revealed to be the working title for the entry.[2][4] "To the Sky" was also recorded in Macedonian, titled "Tamu kaj što pripagjam" (There where I belong).[3]

At Eurovision[]

During the semi-final allocation draw on 20 January 2014 at the Copenhagen City Hall, Macedonia was drawn to compete in the second half of the second semi-final on 8 May 2014.[5] In the second semi-final, the producers of the show decided that Macedonia would perform 11th, following Belarus and preceding Switzerland.[6] Macedonia failed to qualify from the second semi-final, placing 13th in a field of 15 songs with a score of 33 points.[7]

Tijana Dapčević was joined on stage by her younger sister Tamara Todevska, who performed as a backing vocalist.[8] Todevska previously represented Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. Dimitar Andonovski and Nikola Perevski - Pere also joined Dapčević on stage as backing vocalists along with choreographer and dancer Dejan Kolarov.[9] The Macedonian performance featured Tijana performing and interacting with the backing dancer while the LED screens projected white moving lines and concentric patterns.[10]

In Macedonia, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on MRT 1, MRT Sat and Radio Skopje with commentary by Karolina Petkovska.[11][12][13] The Macedonian spokesperson revealing the result of the Macedonian vote in the final was Marko Mark.[14]
