Malvani is a dialect of Konkani with significant Marathi influences and loanwords.[1] Nāgarī script is used to write this language. Malvani is a very popular language, used for sarcastic newspaper articles and local folk stage dramas known as Dashavatar.

Difference from standard Marathi[]

All pronouns have a change from la to ka. Words in Marathi for "yes", "this", "that", "where", "here", "there", have different Malvani counterparts. Other grammatical nuances differ from standard-spoken Marathi.

Geographical distribution[]

Malvani is spoken in the southern part of Konkan Vibhag[2] i.e. Sindhudurg district; chiefly in the talukas of sindhudurg district, i.e. Devgad, Vaibhavwadi, Malvan, Kudal, Kankavli, Sawantwadi, Dodamarg and Vengurla. Furthermore it is spoken in Ratnagiri district, in the Konkan Division of Maharashtra; chiefly in the talukas of Mandangad, Dapoli, Khed, Chiplun (however the Chiplun dialect of Konkani is extinct due to the assimilation of Maharashtrian Konkani people into Marathi linguistic and cultural sphere), Guhagar, Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Lanja and Rajapur. The language is also spoken in North Goa, especially Pernem taluka. The Census Board of India counts Malvani as a Konkani dialect (which is official language of State of Goa). According to Census Board of India, there are around 46851 Malwani speakers throughout the country, with 24 Lakh (2.4 million) Konkani living speakers. According to unofficial reports, around 8,68,825 (868,825) Malvani speakers live throughout the Sindhudurg district. It is very famous language in the southern Konkan region of Maharashtra state.

Malvani Konkani in popular culture[]

The first ever Drama (Natak) was Vastraharan got Huge Popularity was play of Machhindra Kambli. The Zee Marathi channel's 2016 serial Ratris Khel Chale was a TV series on the life of Naik family from Malvan. The series was horror and used Malvani as main language. In the year 2019 Ratris Khel Chale 2 was streamed in Malvani. As well as Gav Gata Gazali became popular which was based on Malvani Culture & Lifestyle. In March 2021 Ratris Khel Chale 3 started streaming. Also there are many movies and documentaries made in Malvani language which are famous showing lifestyle of people in Konkan region, Nature and culture.
