Masdar,(Arabic:مصدر‎), also known as the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, is a UAE-government owned renewable energy company based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Masdar is a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company and was founded by the UAE government in 2006.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] It is guided by The Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, a program that drives new sources of income for the Emirate and strengthens its knowledge-based economic sectors.[6]

The company proposed to complete Masdar City by 2016, which was supposed to be the "first zero-carbon city", but the managers gave up on those plans.[8] The Guardian wrote in 2016, "Masdar City is nowhere close to zeroing out its greenhouse gas emissions now, even at a fraction of its planned footprint."[8] The original plan for the city estimated that 50,000 residents would live there; by 2020, there were 1,300 residents in the city.[9] According to City Lab, the new completion time for the city was estimated to be 2030.[9]

Masdar Clean Energy[]

Masdar Clean Energy is involved in renewable energy projects.[10][11] Masdar Clean Energy follows the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.[12] Some its projects include the Shams Initiative, Dubai’s rooftop solar initiative, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai,[13][14] The Smart Dubai Initiative,[12][15] and the Al Dhafra Solar PV Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Abu Dhabi that aims to be the world's largest solar power plant.[16][17][18][19] The company has also invested in wind power projects,[20][21][22][23][24][25] and waste-to-energy/landfill plants.[26][27][28]

In 2013, Masdar partnered with the government of Seychelles to developed a 6 MW wind farm for Mahé Island.[29][30][31][32][33][34] and started building a hybrid photovoltaic and natural gas concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in Al Ain called Noor 1, and a 30 MW wind farm on Sir Bani Yas island.[35][36][37]

Masdar holds 20% equity in the London Array, a large wind farm off the coast of Britain designed to generate up to 1,000 MW of power.[38][39] Masdar invested in the 20 MW Gemasolar Thermosolar Plant and the twin 50 MW Valle 1 and Valle 2 solar power stations in Spain, which were developed by Torresol Energy, a joint venture between SENER and Masdar with respective equity stakes of 60% and 40%.[36][40][41][42][43]

Masdar City[]

Masdar City is located in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates,[1][3] and was designed to be a zero-carbon city by 2016. The city is powered in part by the Masdar City 10MW Solar Power Plant, the first grid-connected renewable energy project in the UAE and the largest of its kind in the Middle East when inaugurated in 2009. An additional 1MW of rooftop PV is located on the buildings developed as phase 1 of Masdar City.[3][4][6][44]

The development of Masdar City was proposed to centered around pedestrians.[9] The city has a small fleet of autonomous shuttles.[9] There was supposed to be a light rail line but by 2020, it appeared to be years away from fruition.[9]

Masdar City has a university for artificial intelligence (AI), which was launched 2019. The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is a graduate-level research institution, named after Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed.[45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]
