Singles from Maxident
  1. "Case 143"
    Released: October 7, 2022

Maxident is the seventh Korean-language extended play (EP) and tenth overall by South Korean boy band Stray Kids. It was released on October 7, 2022, through JYP Entertainment and Republic Records, seven months after their preceding EP Oddinary (2022). 3Racha (Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han) primarily wrote and produced the EP with the group's other members, alongside producers Raphael, Daviid, Yosia, Tak, 1Take, Kim Park Chella, Hong Ji-sang, Earattack, Chan's, and Darm.

A portmanteau of "max" or "maximum" and "incident" or "accident", Maxident centered on the "love" theme for the first time and utilizes various music genres, such as pop, hip hop, R&B, synthwave, and rock. It consists of eight tracks, including the lead single "Case 143" and the Korean version of "Circus" originally from the Japanese EP of the same name. Several music critics described the EP as Stray Kids' "experimental" release but still retains the group's identity.

Background[]

Stray Kids revealed in the video "Step Out 2022", uploaded to their social media accounts on January 1, 2022, that they would release two albums in 2022 (excluding Japanese releases).[1] The first album was the EP Oddinary, released on March 18.[2] It earned Stray Kids their first appearance and first number-one album on the US Billboard 200 with the biggest week sales in the country in 2022 at the time and made them the third Korean act to top the chart, after BTS and SuperM.[3] From April to July, Stray Kids embarked on their Maniac World Tour in South Korea, Japan, and the United States.[4] During that time, the group released their second Japanese EP Circus on June 22[5] and the Mixtape Project single "Mixtape: Time Out" on August 1, commemorating the fourth anniversary of the announcement of the fandom's name "Stay".[6]

The group's second album of 2022, Maxident, was announced via trailer on September 6 and scheduled for release on October 7, the next month.[7] The EP's title Maxident is a portmanteau of "max" or "maximum", and "accident" or "incident", referring to a massive and unexpected event.[8] Despite "powerful-energy" previous releases, it is the first time of the group to use "love" as the main theme.[9] According to Tumblr interview, the members stated that the songs from Maxident mostly were inspired and wrote during their 2022 tour.[10] Bang Chan revealed in their EP's documentary video Intro "Maxident" that "Give Me Your TMI" was wrote in around 2019–2020.[11] In a Paper interview, 3Racha said that they wrote "3Racha" remotely during their quarantine in March 2022, after most members testing positive for COVID-19.[12]

Music and lyrics[]

Maxident consists of eight tracks, running for twenty-six minutes and forty seconds. 3Racha, an in-house production team of Stray Kids members Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han, wrote and produced most songs on the EP alongside Tak and 1Take of Newtype, Kim Park Chella, Earattack, Chan's, Darm, and Versachoi (with whom the group has worked previously), as well as with Raphael of Producing Lab and Daviid and Yosia of 3scape for the first time. Besides 3Racha, the other members also participated in writing tracks: Hyunjin, Felix and Lee Know for "Taste"; and Seungmin and I.N for "Can't Stop" with Hong Ji-sang.[13] The EP conveys the theme of love, emotions, and relationships with other people and one's self.[14][15]

Songs[]

Maxident opens with "Case 143", a pop,[16] electro-hop[15] love song that likens the confusion one feels when falling in love to an unsolved "case", referencing the number 143, meaning "I love you".[17] A lo-fi[16] R&B-pop sound[18] featuring saxophone riffs,[16] the second track "Chill" discusses a couple whose relationship has "cooled down" but unsuccessfully attempt to avoid a breakup as they do not want to hurt each other.[19] The glitch hop[20] with progressive funk sound[16] third track "Give Me Your TMI" provides background to "Case 143", expressing how one becomes more curious about the person they are interested in,[21] driven by guitar riffs and bass.[18] "Super Board", the fourth track, is a darksynth song[20] creating a "cyberpunk atmosphere" using bass synths and hip-hop drums,[22] coveying the unlifting message, and sound "nyaun" and "zoom".[15]

Tracks five through seven are performed in sub-units. In the drill diss track[23] "3Racha", Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han convey their "pride" and "ambition" as the production team 3Racha, such as chart success, and friendship in the face of fame.[24][25] Next is Lee Know, Hyunjin and Felix's R&B track,[26] "Taste", which details physical intimacy and describes the "mysterious atmosphere" surrounding two people who struggle with the inability to love.[24][25] The lyrics of a "feel-good"[15] pop rock track[23] "Can't Stop", performed by Seungmin and I.N, are about one's heart beating faster when around somebody they like,[24][25] giving a teenage vibe.[27] Maxident concludes with the Korean version of "Circus", a hip hop song comparing themselves as circus performers.[28]

Release and promotion[]

A scene from the Maxident trailer in which differently colored heart-shaped monsters, highlighted the giant pink one, in front of Stray Kids.

On September 6, 2022, Stray Kids uploaded a two-minute-long trailer to announce their seventh Korean-language EP, Maxident.[29] Directed by Lee Hye-sung[30] and shot in New York City during the US leg of the Maniac World Tour, the trailer shows the octet wandering several locations of the city freely. Piano melodies initially accompany the visuals before the music switches to EDM beats as the subway hurtles across the scene.[31] Concluding on the rooftop, the trailer shows Hyunjin receiving a mysterious phone call before differently colored heart-shaped monsters, highlighted the giant pink one, fall from the sky in front of the members, ending up at a crime scene.[32] Eight ten-second-long individual trailers were later uploaded on September 7 and 8, cut from the main trailer.[33][34]

Maxident was made available to pre-order and pre-save on the same date as the release of the trailer in three editions on CD: a limited "Go" version and two standards, "T-Crush" and "Heart".[35] Stray Kids gave an interview and appeared on the digital exclusive and the Collector's Edition Zine covers for Billboard on September 8.[36][37] The complete track listing of the EP was posted on September 13, confirming "Case 143" as the lead single and including "Circus", originally from their Japanese EP of the same name, recorded in Korean.[38] A mashup video providing sneak peeks at the tracks premiered at the "Seoul Special (Unveil 11)" shows of the tour on September 17 and 18 and was uploaded to the group's social media accounts one day later.[39]

Stray Kids teased the tracks from the EP via snippet videos called "Unveil: Track". The first unveiling was "Super Board" on September 23,[40] followed by "Chill" three days later.[41] Third were the three sub-unit tracks—"3Racha", "Taste", and "Can't Stop"—released on September 29.[42] The final, "Give Me Your TMI", was released on October 2.[43] Series of teaser images were teased in three concepts. The first depicts Stray Kids in the car wash filled with soap foam.[44][45] The second shows the members wearing sailor-esque costumes and posing with a sailboat outdoors.[46][47] For the third, solo photos expressed the members posing with different heart-shaped objects, while the group sits on a floor scattered with red hearts.[48][49]

Two music video and a performance video teaser for "Case 143" were uploaded from October 3 to 5.[50][51][52] Another snippet and choreography for the lead single were revealed via TikTok on October 6.[53] Before the release, Stray Kids uploaded the 28-minute documentary video Intro "Maxident" to introduce the EP[54] and held an online press conference.[55] Maxident was released on October 7, 2022, in conjunction with an accompanying music video for "Case 143", at retail stores and on digital music and streaming platforms.[56] Four exclusive digital versions, including the member's voice memos, was released exclusively in the United States for a limited time on October 11,[57] while the physical individual "Case" versions was available on October 14.[58] The group host the third season of M2's reality program Finding SKZ, titled Finding SKZ Get Edition. The first episode was premiered on October 13.[59]

Live performances[]

At their world tour's "Seoul Special (Unveil 11)" shows, held on September 17 and 18 at KSPO Dome,[60] Stray Kids performed three sub-unit tracks from Maxident, "3Racha", "Taste", and "Can't Stop" for the first time, alongside the Korean version of "Circus".[61] Since the release date, the group promoted the EP and its lead single "Case 143" at several South Korean music shows, such as Music Bank,[62][63] Show! Music Core,[64] Inkigayo,[65][66] Show Champion,[67] and M Countdown.[68] They also performed the lead single at Music Universe K-909, alongside the sub-unit tracks;[69] and the 2022 The Fact Music Awards, along with "Maniac", on October 8.[70]

NME[18]

Crystal Bell from Teen Vogue described Maxident as being "about love, but it's still characteristically Stray Kids." She also stated that the album is an "eclectic", and "experimental" release.[16] Rhian Daly of NME gave the EP four out of five stars, and wrote about it that "explores romance deeply for the first time, but doesn't compromise Stray Kids' unique musical DNA in the process," and "should have no problem in furthering the reputation they've been building for themselves." She also praised the group as "true experimenters and artists showing their thrilling progression in real-time."[18] Billboard writer Jeff Benjamin described the tracks from the EP as "aren't gushy, catchy love songs, but quirky and unorthodox explorations into all things connection."[15]

Commercial performance[]

On September 28, 2022, one week prior to release, JYP Entertainment reported that Maxident had exceeded 2.24 million copies in pre-order sales,[71] and later surpassed 2.37 million copies by the day of release to become the first album by any of the label's artists to reach the double-million sales mark and breaking the record set by the 1.3 million pre-orders for Stray Kids' previous EP, Oddinary.[72] According to Hanteo, the EP sold 1,308,971 copies on its first day,[73] and 2,185,013 copies on its first week, becoming the group's highest first week sales, and the fourth in Hanteo history.[74] Maxident debuted at number one on the South Korean Circle Album Chart in the chart issue dated October 2–8, 2022, selling 1,602,930 copies on its first week of the two-day tracking period.[75] All eight of the album's track entered the top 40 of the component Circle Download Chart simultaneously.[76]

In the United States, Maxident debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 on the chart issue date of October 22, 2022, becoming Stray Kids' second consecutive number-one album in the country after six months and three weeks of Oddinary. It was also marked as the fourth album by a South Korean act to top the chart in 2022, following Oddinary, BTS's Proof, and Blackpink's Born Pink, and the fourth non-English-language album to lead the chart in 2022, after mostly-Korean Oddinary and Proof, and Bad Bunny's all-Spanish Un Verano Sin Ti, and the sixteenth overall. Of the 117,000 album-equivalent units, the album opened with 110,000 pure sales, of which 107,000 were CDs, and 3,000 were digital albums; 9.61 million on-demand streams; and a negligible amount was track-equivalent units.[77] In Australia, the album entered ARIA Albums Chart at number four, becoming their second top-20 entry after Noeasy (2021), and their first top five album.[78]
