Member states of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries has nine member states.[1] All have the Portuguese language as official language, and only East Timor and Equatorial Guinea have a second official language.

In 2005, CPLP Council of Ministers meeting in Luanda adopted the status of associate observer for non-member states to promote better international co-operation to reach the Community's objectives and 3 states were subsequently admitted.

In five territories, English as well as one or more indigenous languages are official: Spanish in Puerto Rico, Samoan in American Samoa, and Chamorro in both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Carolinian is also an official language in the Northern Mariana Islands.[2][3]
