Money Heist (Korean종이의 집; RRJongieui Jib) is an upcoming South Korean television series based on the Spanish heist crime drama series of the same name. The Korean series directed by Kim Sung-ho and written by Ryu Yong-jae, is an original Netflix series, starring Yoo Ji-tae, Park Hae-soo, Jun Jong-seo, Lee Won-jong, and Park Myung-hoon.[1] It depicts a hostage crisis situation set in the Korean Peninsula, involving a genius strategist and people with different personalities and abilities.[2] It is slated to release in 2022 on Netflix.[3]

Synopsis[]

The series, being a remake of Spanish TV drama is following the storyline and characters of the original series. The writer has brought in cultural and language changes to plot to give it a fresh flavour. Yoo Ji-tae portraying as 'The Professor', the strategist criminal mastermind, plans to pull off a heist in Korean Peninsula. The operation involves genius strategists and desperadoes with different characteristics and abilities, who have to face unusual situations.

Development[]

In June 2020, it was reported that BH Entertainment was planning for a remake of Money Heist co-producing it with Content Zium. They were in talks with Netflix, and it was in the development stage.[13] On December 1, it was reported that a Korean remake of the series has been confirmed by Netflix with Kim Hong-sun as director and Ryu Yong-jae as script writer. BH Entertainment would be in charge of production, with series having 12 episodes.[14][15]

Casting[]

On March 31, the casting line-up of the series was confirmed by Netflix.[16][17] After finalising the cast, process of localisation of the story line up and the characters began. Stress was to keep narrative of the original and the physical properties of the characters alive.[18] Lim Ji-yeon joined the cast in April 2021.[10] Lee Hyun-woo replaced Park Jung-woo due to date conflicts with other series Fly High Butterfly.[19] The Korean characters and cast was compared drawing the similarities and differences among the original and adaptation.[20]

Filming[]

Filming on July 7, was suspended for the day following guidelines of the quarantine for COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea, for pre-emptive quarantine.[21]
