Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee is the soundtrack album for the upcoming film of the same name directed by Darbuka Siva, who also composed the film's soundtrack and score. The film produced by Sameer Bharat Ram featured predominantly newcomers in the film's cast and crew. The album featured six tracks with the songs being written by Thamarai, Kaber Vasuki and Keerthi. The soundtrack album was released by Sony Music on 31 March 2021.[1]

Development[]

Darbuka Siva started working on the music as soon as the scripting was completed. During the scripting process, Siva put down some basic sketches of how he wanted the songs and the music to be.[2] The title song "Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee" was the first to be composed, with the first line of the song was fixed even before Thamarai was approached to write the song as the director wanted it to be the title of the film.[3] Darbuka Siva collaborated with Sid Sriram and Thamarai for the second time after working with them in "Maruvaarthai" for Enai Noki Paayum Thota. The song was released as the first single on 2 September 2020. After its release, Siva was looking for a Rock 'n Roll vibe so as to "reflect the vibe of the 90s and the energy of the 90s kids", as a result the song "Kaatrilae" was produced as the second song from the film's album.[4] After the song was made, Kaber Vasuki was approached to write the lyrics for the song. After trying out a couple of singers, Nakul Abhyankar was chosen to sing this song. It was later released as the second single on 7 December 2020.[5]

He later worked on a song which needed a "perspective of a teenage girl in the 90s".The music director felt the music also needed that throwback vibe of the 90s film songs that were made for this sort of a situation, so Siva then came up with the song "Pudhidhaai". Keerthi was chosen to write the song after she had approached the composer over e-mail with her sample lyrics. The work for the song happened virtually only over e-mail interactions with Keerthi, who wanted to maintain her privacy and not make any appearances on any media.[6] Jonita Gandhi was chosen as the playback singer for the song. On recording, she stated that "the song was nostalgic, not just lyrically, but also reminds us to relive the memories, especially during the pandemic". She further added that "I was given the vibe that it needs to be a little retro and happy. It is almost like candypop (genre) in India; almost making one feel youthful. Especially towards the end of the song, he wanted a lot of the parts to sound ‘freeing’."[7] This marked the singer collaborating with Siva for the second time after she earlier recorded "Thirudaadhe Thirudaadhe" for Enai Nokki Paayum Thota.[8] The song was released as the third single on 21 January 2021,[7] which coincided a promotional curtain raiser event featuring prominent standup comedians and Youtubers.[9]

"Neel Koadugal" was the fourth song to be produced. Darbuka Siva chose Bombay Jayashri and Isreali singer Dima El Sayed for the song, which he described it as an ode to time. Keerthi who penned the lyrics for the previous song also worked in writing this song, and was released as the film's fourth single on 23 February 2021.[10] Later the fifth track "Nedunaal" sung by Sreekanth Hariharan, son of playback singer Hariharan was released on 10 March 2021.[11] The soundtrack album which was unveiled on 31 March 2021, featured six tracks including all the tracks which were released as singles earlier, it also had a reprised version of the title track performed by Shweta Subram.[1]
