Coldplay concert chronology

The Music of the Spheres World Tour will be the eighth concert tour undertaken by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was announced on 14 October 2021, in support of their ninth studio album Music of the Spheres, which marked the band's return after the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] They had not toured for the promotion of their previous album, Everyday Life (2019), as it was decided to pause touring until they could work out how to ensure that it would be environmentally friendly.

This vision will be realised in the Music of the Spheres World Tour: alongside the announcement, the band released a detailed plan setting out how they could have a minimal impact on the environment, resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide generated in relation to the A Head Full of Dreams Tour. The plan was developed for over two years by Coldplay and a number of leading environmental experts, and features a number of innovative sustainability strategies. For example, the band have joined forces with BMW to create the first "mobile, rechargeable show battery" to power each concert on the tour, and have announced that the tour's stage will be built from "a combination of lightweight, low-carbon and re-usable materials (including bamboo and recycled steel) that can be properly reused or recycled at the end of the tour". They have also pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold.[2]

The tour will feature extensive pyrotechnic and confetti visuals similar to the Mylo Xyloto Tour and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, and will also include a third generation of Xylobands for audience members to wear. However, according to Coldplay's sustainability plan, these features will be adapted in such a way that their inclusion in each show on the tour will be more considerate towards the environment: the band have stated that they are investing in "a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals", that "confetti used during the show will be 100% biodegradable and will require significantly less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours", and that the LED wristbands will be made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials".[3] The first leg will be visiting the Americas and Europe, starting in Costa Rica's Estadio Nacional on 18 March 2022.[4]

Reception[]

Ticket sales for the European leg were opened on 22 October 2021. Due to high demand, Coldplay announced a fifth and sixth date at Wembley Stadium in the same day.[5] On 26 October 2021, more extra dates were made available at King Baudouin Stadium and Stade de France, with Fnac reporting that the band sold over 200,000 tickets in record time on the latter venue.[6] According to an article published by NME on the same day, the tour has already sold over one million tickets across the continent.[7] General sales for Argentina opened on 9 December 2021, the band added three extra shows at Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti throughout the day and sold another 200,000 tickets in less than seven hours.[8] During the next day it was confirmed that all dates for the country were officially sold out.[9] On 13 December 2021, Punto Ticket, the company responsible for sales and distribution in Chile, reported that the Music of the Spheres World Tour has already sold over two million tickets globally.[10]
