Coldplay are a British rock band formed in London by Chris Martin (lead vocals, piano), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), Will Champion (drums, percussion) and Phil Harvey (creative direction).[1] They have released nine studio albums: Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005) Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), and Everyday Life (2019), Music of the Spheres (2021), which have sold over 100 million copies.[a] The band have released over thirty singles as well, including "Yellow", which was their first hit in the United States and reached number six on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart;[4] "Speed of Sound", which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart;[5] "Viva la Vida", which was their first number-one single in both the UK and the US;[6][7] "Paradise", which was the best selling rock song of 2011 in the UK;[8] and "My Universe", which debuted at number one on Billboard's Hot 100, making Coldplay the first British group to do so.[9]
The band have received 214 awards from 581 nominations. They were honoured with nine awards from thirty nominations in the Brit Awards, being the most awarded and nominated group of all time in the ceremony.[10] Coldplay are also the first act in history to win British Album of the Year three times and British Group four times, scoring the most nominations for both of these categories as well. They have received seven Grammy Awards from thirty-six nominations, winning Song of the Year and Record of the Year once, while being nominated for Album of the Year twice.
Coldplay have received twenty-two MTV Awards, including seven MTV Video Music Awards from twenty-six nominations, eight MTV Europe Music Awards from twenty-eight nominations, one Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica from six nominations, one MTV Video Music Awards Japan from ten nominations and five MTV Video Play Awards, which do not have prior nominations. The music video for "The Scientist" received all three awards for which it was nominated at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. They have received four World Music Awards and nine Billboard Music Awards, with two of them being from the Live Music Awards. Coldplay have also been shortlisted in the 87th Academy Awards for their song "Atlas" and named Songwriters of the Year by the Ivor Novello Awards and ASCAP London Music Awards in 2003 and 2010 respectively. Notes[]
- ^ The term "records" is used for album and single sales combined. Coldplay, however, sold 100 million copies in albums alone, while Parlophone has not disclosed the amount of records.[2][3]
- ^ Indicates the year of ceremony. Each year is linked to the article about the awards held that year, whenever possible.
- ^ Everyday Life also received a nomination for Best Recording Package, which was credited to art director Pilar Zeta instead of the band.
- ^ They were named the best of 2008, while being runners-up in 2002 and 2005.
