The Mnet Asian Music Award for Song of the Year (Korean: 올해의 노래상; RR: Olhaeui noraesang) is an honor presented at the annual Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), a South Korean awards ceremony, consisting of one of its four most prestigious daesang (or grand prize) awards.[1] The accolade was first awarded by the network Mnet during the ceremony's eighth edition in 2006—then titled the Mnet Km Music Festival. Having gone through various name changes since its inaugural ceremony in 1999,[2] the ceremony was renamed the Mnet Asian Music Awards from 2009 onwards.[3]
Prior to 2021, the judging criteria for the award consisted a breakdown of 20% online voting, 40% international and local expert evaluation, 30% digital sales, and 10% record sales.[4] However, preceding the announcement of the nominations for the 2021 ceremony in November of that year, a new set of criteria for the award were unveiled with the removal of online fan voting;[5][6] the revised breakdown currently consists of 40% judges panel evaluation, 30% digital song sales from the Gaon Digital Chart, and 10% each for record sales based on the Gaon Album Chart, music video views from YouTube, and global streaming derived from Apple Music.[7]
The award was first presented to SG Wannabe for "Partner for Life" in 2006, where they also won Album of the Year for its parent album The 3rd Masterpiece. Twice and BTS currently holds the distinction for most awarded overall in the category, having both won for three consecutive years. Two artists currently share the title for second-most wins, with two each: Big Bang (2007, 2015), and 2NE1 (2009, 2011). One artist holds the title for the most Song of the Year nominations—IU—with a total of six nominations throughout the ceremony's history. BTS has earned the second-most nominations, having been nominated five times in 2016 and 2018–21.
