National Institute of Design or (NIDs) are autonomous public design schools located across India. NIDs are in Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Bangalore (Karnataka), Kurukshetra (Haryana) , Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) and Jorhat (Assam) and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). The institutes functions as an autonomous body under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry , Government of India. NIDs are recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under Ministry of Science and Technology, the government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation. They are accorded as Institutes of National Importance by Act of Parliament, under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014.[1]

Institutes[]

National Institute of Design, Haryana is under construction which was opened by Haryana CM Bhupendra Singh Hooda in 2012. The creation of four NIDs was suggested as part of the Government's 2007 National Design Policy.[2] The foundation stone for National Institute of Design Assam was laid by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February 2011,[3] while land has also been earmarked for the Andhra Pradesh campus in Amaravati.

Admissions[]

NID's entrance exam Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which is also popularly called the National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED) is a National level entrance exam organized for admission to UG and PG courses separately by NID each year. These exams for B.Des and M.Des exams are conducted in 12 exam centres across India.[4]

NID Entrance Exams[]

NID conducts a two-stage entrance exam, NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT), to select candidates for admission to its B.Des, M.Des and GDPD courses. NID DAT is further divided into two stages: NID DAT Prelims is conducted in stage 1 and NID DAT Mains is conducted in stage 2.[citation needed]

NID DAT Prelims[]

This stage 1 examination is a pen and paper-based written test aims to evaluate the candidate's visualisation skills, creative & observation skills, knowledge, comprehension, analytical ability etc. This test is a mix of subjective and objective type questions and holds a weightage of 30% in the total scheme of examination. NID DAT prelims are generally held in the month of December-January every year.[citation needed]

NID DAT Mains[]

Shortlisted candidates from Stage 1 are invited to appear for Stage 2 exams. NID DAT Mains is generally held in May and holds a weightage of 70% in the calculation of the final score.[citation needed]

Academics[]

The courses available to join at various campuses of NID include Bachelor of Design (BDes), Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD), Masters of Design (MDes), Doctorate of Philosophy(PhD) in Design, Foundation Courses are UG courses and International Programs through Research and International workshops.[citation needed]

Undergraduate program[]

  • Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) - This 4-year full-time program is offered in 8 disciplines at the Ahmedabad campus.

Postgraduate program[]

  • Master of Design (M.Des.) - This 2.5 year full-time program is offered in 19 disciplines across all 3 campuses.

Doctoral/Fellowship[]

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - This program is offered in both full-time and part-time
