The station opened on 1 November 1862[1] on the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) line between Oldham Clegg Street and Greenfield, the bulk of which had been open since 1856. It replaced the LNWR's original terminus at Oldham Mumps which closed the same day.[1]

The station closed on 2 May 1955,[1] when the Delph Donkey passenger train service to Delph via Greenfield was withdrawn. The line remained open for goods traffic until 1964.
