"On God" is a song by American recording artist Kanye West, from his ninth studio album, Jesus Is King (2019). Fellow rapper Young Thug and singer Dua Lipa were speculated to appear on the song, though they ultimately were not featured. The song received mixed reviews from music critics, who generally praised the production but often wrote negatively of the lyrical content.

Background[]

On September 18, 2018, Young Thug tweeted to West that if not included on Yandhi, he will never talk to him again and ended the tweet with "#OnGod."[2] West's wife Kim Kardashian later revealed a track list for Jesus Is King on September 27, 2019, which included a track titled "On God".[3] With the track's inclusion, speculation began that it was to include a feature from Young Thug due to the title, after Yandhi had been axed.[4] On October 2, Young Thug questioned West over whether or not his "verse about the devil" is still on Jesus Is King.[5] West did not reply that same day and the former was ultimately not featured on the album.[5][6]

Reception[]

"On God" was met with mixed reviews from music critics, who mostly had praise for the production but criticism of West's lyricism. Jordan Bassett of NME wrote that the song "shimmers with space-age synths."[7] Writing for Spectrum Culture, Daniel Bromfield cited the song as including "one of the great Pi'erre Bourne beats."[8] Alphonse Pierre expressed mixed feelings in Pitchfork, noting West's "sloppy rapping" while calling his lyrical content "self-sacrifice at its most self-absorbed," though Pierre claimed that West's "capabilities as a studio curator and beatmaker haven't completely waned" and positively compared the song's production to that of West's third studio album Graduation (2007).[9] Entertainment Weekly's Brian Josephs criticized the lyricism for seeing West "preaching," though commented that the "glitzy synths" of the song "recall Graduation."[10] It was named by Andrew Barker of Variety as one of the worst tracks on Jesus Is King, with him panning West's lyricism.[11] Wren Graves from Consequence of Sound slammed the song by calling it "twinkling cheese," while labeling the song as "a dollar-store ripoff" in comparison to West's single "All of the Lights" (2010) and criticizing the lyrical content.[12]

"On God" has received a nomination for Top Gospel Song at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, competing against fellow album tracks "Follow God", "Closed on Sunday" and "Selah" for the award.[13]
