Peene is situated on the outskirts of Folkestone and is joined with the neighbouring village of Newington (where, at the 2011 census, the population was included).

The village sits on the edge of the Channel Tunnel and was joined to the Elham Valley Railway. Although no station existed at Peene, the railway passed over a bridge on the road into the village. The village is now home to the Elham Valley Railway Museum which is open to the public.
